Long time readers might be familiar with this tragic point in life of young Kaycee Jones where she and her sister Alex were abducted by psycho serial killer Al Brunton… Alex was unfortunately murdered before Go!Anna was able to track them down and rescue Kaycee. None of this has been seen directly in these pages but recounted through various flashbacks in chapter 4 (see, for example 4.84) and as far back as pgage 1.30. As you’ll probably notice the visual style of Brunton keeps moving around a bit… (I’ll blame that on Kaycee’s post-traumatic memory of events rather than my own inconsistency!). It is my intention to tell this story, mostly from Go!Anna’s viewpoint – possibly after this chapter finishes.
As for the woman in red and black, you may remember future Kaycee becomes Maverick… first seen in Bad Karma on page 4.141… although that was also a future, alternative, somewhat battle scarred version (as recounted on 4.292)!
Nice one Jones! Looks like you’re developing her psychic resistance up a bit since Maya, it makes for a good character development and stops us from just seeing her victimized by this scene over and over again. She is clearly Magellan material.
By the way it looks like the current Dr. Spooky page is 16 and the archive goes up to 11. Will there be a chance to read 13-15 later?
Once you vote there are bitly links above the latest page which will take you to pages 13, 14 & 15… however I’ll be updating the archive on Monday so that it will show pages 1-16…
Thanks, I was averting my eyes from 16 to avoid spoilers and I didn’t see the links 😀
that doll has sort of a charisma like look. is kaycee’s subconscious trying to say something? 😉
Good point… used that comment for Charisma’s tweet about this update!
speaking of tweets, i notice that the twitter sidebars are missing.
Seems to be back now… probably just Twitter buckling under the weight of the “Women in Binders” meme…
Interesting that this Maverick isn’t the future version that Kaycee met, with the full-face mask, or even the pre-scarring version who killed Brunton in the pre-Bad Karma timeline- this one has shorter hair, and long sleeves.
And I still maintain that Kaycee must be a Top Gun fan. Will she have a sidekick called Goose? 🙂
It’s not just the return of Vostok, but also the return of Darth Kaycee…
I’m not really sure that’s a good thing. Future Jones was a rather dark figure; personally, I would have been fine with her remaining a potential future, rather than a definite one.
Not quite Darth Kaycee… that version was somewhat older and damaged (physically and emotionally), this version maybe not so much. Maybe!
Wow! That last panel rocks. Its interesting to see that Kaycee’s psychic avatar is a kick ass blend of her current self and Future Jones (nicely spotted Dean). Less dark that her future self though, she floored the bad guy with a punch rather than slicing and dicing him.
It remains to be seen just how far this fantasy goes, though. If Kaycee has gained control of her psychological feedback, then she could go all the way to murdering Burton with no tangible real-world consequences (save, perhaps, a prying psychic using the fantasy as evidence of violent vigilantist behaviour, and using that as a negative mark in Kaycee’s cadetship).
Will Kaycee’s fantasy see her simply defeat memory-Burton, beat him to a pulp but leave him “alive” in her memory, or go all-out and kill the figment? For that matter, will she even get a chance to do so? If these comas were induced by Vlax (partially or fully), then I think Kaycee might just have invited the villainess in to her subconscious by not letting Kaycee’s own anxieties and grief defeat herself.
Yea! Kaycee is taking control of the situation that has emotionally paralyzed her for a decade now. By conquering her issues this way, she should be able to: 1) not kill Burton when she meets him again, thus staying in Magellan Australia, 2) get out of her head, stand up, and deal with the situation on Locke Island. Kaycee to the rescue! More for Charisma to bitch about.
Daamn this page rocks on so many levels! 🙂
great page
Apparently Maverick can’t spell.
But she can punch real good, which is more important for a superheroine anyway.
i wonder if anyone else is fighting back in their comatose nightmares, it would stand to reason that with the type and scale of people involvled that kaycee wouldn’t be the only one. i guess the only real question is if any of the prisoners have been able to fight back.
it would be interesting if chraisma is one of the few others that manage to fight their way out of the coma.
It would mean Charisma has a stronger strength of character than she has shown so far. Steven would have to build a good in-head story for Charisma’s victory over her catatonia. Then she flies up, meets up with Kaycee, and together they save the day. BFF!
