Geneva calling: As long time readers will know, Annie and Freya have been friends going way, way back. We saw Freya (who, as Vybe, has the ability to sense emotions in others and to heighten and alter emotions en masse) graduate alongside Annie in the opening scene of this story. Those of you with super awesome memories would recall Freya also knew Dianne. While it’s never been explicitly stated, all three of them were originally at Greenslopes (which was name dropped in the History section as an institution that trains students with abilities in the non-combat use of their powers). It’s kind of like a Xavier’s but without the constant threat of annihilation, while those Greenslopes students that want to get into super-heroing apply to Magellan Academy… Annie and Freya went went the latter route while Dianne stayed at Greenslopes..
Oz Magellan and Euro Magellan, the local branches of Force Magellan are mentioned here, and while we’ve previously seen Oz Magellan (based in Sydney) and Magellan USA (based in New York) we’ve never seen Euro Magellan (based in Geneva) in action. Anyway, that’s where Freya has landed following graduation and, for those that don’t know, Grímsvötn is an active volcano in Iceland.
One final note, some of you might recall that in the present day Freya is in a relationship with Tom Bass and yet here she is apparently sleeping with a woman… so yeah, she’s bi. I guess it never really came up before!
Next update: Sunday October 14, 2018: Dropping in on Oz Magellan.
Legacy: The next voting incentive about the Magellanverse’s speedsters, including the very first should be up Wednesday October 10 (about 6pm Sydney time/3am New York) so please check back from then. Voting gives you access to the current page, previous pages (via bit.ly links), raises Magellan’s profile and hopefully scores us a few more readers (oh, and BTW, pages might contain nudity!).
Huh… I kinda thought Freya and Tom had been together for the longest. Cool beans! You had her sexuality pegged the whole time?
Freya has always been one of my low-key favorites… she’s so grounded.
it weirdly makes sense to me that an empath would be Bi
More-so than many modern day fictions, I think pan- or omnisexual might be more appropriate terms for Freya. Then again, maybe she is aware but still limits herself to just two.
Yes, that’s probably ultimately true.
I would add, regarding the sexuality of most of the characters in Magellan, unless they are specifically in a relationship (or have previously been in one, or have indicated a preference in finding a partner) then I probably haven’t really decided which way they lean.
That said, probably 80-ish% of the humans are straight (don’t even ask me about the non-humans!!). So far, Annie, Luke, Captain Victoria, Tom (probably?), Charisma, Billy, Mudge, Olga (when she was Gola), Maya (and Chang, R.I.P.), Joe, Hamish and no doubt a few others I can’t think of offhand, have been seen to be in, or are wanting to be in, a hetro relationship. Those are just a few of the many that would be.
Janice and Jemima, on the other hand, are an out lesbian couple. There is one male cadet that, while not yet specifically out in the narrative, has always been gay from my understanding of him as a character.
Have I always had Freya pegged as bi? I can’t say I have, but given her suite of powers it dawned on me that she would be not just a sensual person but that she would have great empathy and desire and attraction towards others regardless of their sex/gender.
One last note… a while back there was some discussion by readers wondering if Kaycee was asexual. Hm! We’ll have to explore that at some time!
About the non-humans, I think there is two that are known to be hetero already: Gifford [see Gifford: Hero] and Bif [http://magellanverse.com/zealot/]. Maybe more. Brelvis only half counts because he is half human, and Morwena is… complicated 😀
Lesbian, she probably is not: http://magellanverse.com/comics/2005-03-06-air.jpg
The matter of Kaycee’s sexuality (or lack of) also may affect Billy, who might have a crush on her, but feel insecure about it, what might or not relate to “man of steel, woman of kleenex” mindpoison issues brought from previous interactions with Charisma: http://magellanverse.com/comics/2007-05-30-mistake.jpg
It might be that Kaycee simply felt very violated, and given her personal history with that sort of thing, I’d say she was actually responding very mildly to such an invasion of personal space.
Can you tell us whether Freya’s partner is someone we’ve met before?
Not yet! 🙂
Will there be a history of Greenslopes, unless there already is one!?
There isn’t a history but I do have a story in mind.
Ohh, I’m looking forward to this 🙂 It seems you have enough stories to tell to last our lifetimes, and this makes me very happy!
Technically it will only last for my lifetime… whether that is longer than everyone else’s remains to be seen! Although I don’t see myself still drawing when I’m 90+ years old, but you never know.
Can you just win a (big) lottery already?
That way you can quit the job and focus on this and we can maybe get more regular updates? 😛
Every week I try to win, and try, and try… about six weeks ago there was $80m going but it didn’t go to me!
If I ever get the $60,000,000.00 lotto here, you can expect a big old financial investment for your continued work on Magellan, Grace.
I don’t gamble, and if I am to win the Nobel prize (not impossible since I do research materials analysis, but almost as unlikely as a big lottery win) that would be several decades into the future.
…somehow pressed the button before I finished…
If I did win such a price some of it would go to Grace’s comic-making, for sure, it has helped me a lot.
Realistically though, I just hope to get a big enough wage that I can send any money at all that way.
Will this story also cover Wombat Man’s “deal” with Oz Magellan and while I’m at it what should be the name of Magellan’s Canada branch,if there is one!?
There is a Canadian branch – the Magellan Maple Leafs maybe??! 😉 But seriously, I don’t have an official name in mind as yet…
Given certain social factors within Canada, I would believe it would be called something like:
“The Magellan Division of Canada / L’équipe Magellan du Canadien”
or “MDC/EMC” for short.
This might also be an appropriate time to mention that I failed my mandatory French classes . . .
I like it!
Then have some members doing their impression of Bob and Doug Mackenzie..
Hero #1: How’s it goin’ eh?
I really enjoyed John Byrne’s Canadian Alpha Flight which he spun out of The Uncanny X-Men back in the 1980s. It was the first time I’d read an ongoing comic series about a super team from a country other than the United States. Pretty sure it had a few “ehs” in it to!
Magellan, Pardon? 😊
Going back to that page on their graduation i could not stop noticing that the Man Who Can was part of the same class and seemed to have a tense relation with Anna. What makes me even more curious about the morass implied by his nightmares on previous chapters.
They have some interaction in Chapter 4, Bad Karma, too which hints strongly at a poor relationship between them.
