In case you’re new an are wondering who Mudge Wilson is and what Kaycee (and probably most other female cadets at Magellan) might have against him… you have to check out this sequence starting on page 1.26! For a refresher on the “New/Old Gola Beh Show” you should check out the several pages starting at 6.93!

So, what happens if someone doesn’t have a major psychological trauma? Of course, since this is a superhero comic, that question is entirely academic.
They wouldn’t be lying down in a coma in the first place!
That’s true… it would be a very boring superhero comic if they didn’t have emotional traumas… but as we’ll see it’s also a bit more than just that!
Interesting how Fatima’s representation of herself is exactly what she is now.
Also, poor Mudge.
Was it said whether in this state they are able to physically manipulate anything? Olga’s powers work, but they’re mental. Lazy of Kaycee not to consider which mental powers might be most useful, like Maya’s? (Who I have to think *must* be next?) Or could Charisma still help most, physically, if she wasn’t an ass?
Maya’s mental powers might make her mind-scape a difficult place. Also who ever is freed would need to be a team player so not Charisma or the goddess. Brian would be a good choice, though no-one listens to him:).
They don’t know where Charisma is, do they?
Not at the moment, nope…
The issue of non-telepathic powers and whether they work in this state, if at all, will certainly be getting looked at (eventually!)
Olga doesn’t know how the other two freed themselves, but how did she free herself or was she too confused to be affected?
She was in her older-self avatar. When she changed to her younger-self avatar, she lost some of her memories.
I probably didn’t have Olga express it properly, what she doesn’t understand is how two non-telepaths have freed themselves (although I suppose Fatima can be considered in part telepathic)… however, you’re correct she was apparently very confused when she encountered Kaycee in the first instance so it’s likely she doesn’t even understand how she broke out of the nightmare either.
I think the person to help should be Kwan. Kwan’s issues might be very complicated indeed; with her level of cognitive abilities, it would take some strongly weird stuff to confuse her. Mind you, it could be as easy as helping her deal with some cultural/family issues that many people have. She is probably one of the most capable to help once she realizes that she is trapped within her own mind. Or she could be trapped in an endless loop of possibilities and contingencies, unable to see the way out; the Triumphant Trio to the rescue! That could be fun to watch.
They’re certainly going to be making some considered choices for their next candidate to mind-dive… doesn’t mean it will be a good choice though!
Mr. Wilson it is then.
After they help everyone they still have to figure out to put a pillow over what’s her name. The bad guy that turned Olga young again… Never get old, your memory is the… what was I saying?
Despite Kaycees aversion, Mudge might be the easiest one to fix. Unless I’ve forgotten something along the way, he doesn’t seem to have any serious problems apart from the rather sensible (given his abilities) resentment to being touched physically. Sure, he’s a pervy teenager, but then again what can you expect when he can’t actually touch anyone? That will happen.
Also, he’s used to receiving information in memory dumps, unlike most of the other cadets.
I certainly anticipate Mudge getting his moment in the sun during this story…
I know, no loving for Mudge! I chose Olga’s words very carefully here, had she used a different turn of phrase (not indicating intimacy) Kaycee might have felt less likely to reject Mudge out of hand.
The ease of mental fixing is debatable for Mudge. From evidence in
http://magellanverse.com/newb/ (history #8) and also http://magellanverse.com/engrams/ (Redux #4), the onset of superpowers is quite sudden. And since there doesn’t seem to be ANY back story for Mudge, we have no idea who or what Mudge has the experiences of. As of yet we haven’t seen Mudge look for specific info as he is hesitant to use his power (not counting Psi-Jector) and we don’t know how many times he’s done it accidentally, so we don’t know what kind of trauma he has piled up from other people. Tom Bass seeing Freya brutally murdered and Kaycee’s sister being murdered by Al Burton are the only traumas we have seen Mudge touch on but that doesn’t mean those are the only ones that have affected Mudge. So in conclusion, Mudge won’t be that easy to fix because of his ability.
The issue for Mudge is primarily the physical aspect of his power – he needs to touch in order for it to manifest whereas other telepaths just think their way in. This is where it goes awry, he can’t shut it off (ie not have it activated thru touch) or control the pain that it causes. Will we be getting some progress for him in the course of the story? Stay tuned!
She doesn’t have the experience, meaning at this point in her mind/memories she hasn’t tried much or she simply never did. The info dump could be considered. a form of mind manipulation
Gola Beh has never been shown to be able to control minds, which is what I think is meant by mind manipulation. If she had the power to implant suggestions in people’s minds, it would probably be relatively easy to force the victims to see that they are in an illusion or to even manipulate the illusion itself since it comes from the victim’s mind.
It could be that her power set does not cover mind control or that she has such little talent and interest in it that she focused on other mentalist abilities, mainly information sharing and mental shielding. Since she has the telekinetic blast power, she hasn’t had to develop offensive mental abilities such as mind manipulation.
That pretty much sums it up!
One of the things I’ve been doing in Magellan is cultivating different sets of telepathic powers so that not all telepaths are the same – so yes, Mudge, Maya, Olga and even Fatima are telepathis but all in very different ways. There are mind manipulators though… we’ve met some already… hm!
The anti-president?
Yes… and one other…
I went for an archive binge and then rediscovered that the other one is
Brainspike.
Yes, this pleases xmung.(now read this in gollum’s voice.)
Is there any significance to Kaycee no longer wearing her mask?
poor mudge, if anyone needs someone to understand their problems i’d say it’d be mudge. pretty much all of his problems are derived from his inability to touch, once you can wrap your head around that he becomes almost normal. now that i think about it, mudge needs to date a telepath, so that they can touch while non physical, though i guess a magic user will do. thinking of mudge raises the question of eating as well, does his powers work on non humans, and if so does that mean that he can’t eat animal products due to the same touch issue he has? and what about silverware, does he end up dealing with psychic impressions off of the silver he uses?
He wears gloves which helps to significantly reduce anything he might pick up in a secondary way – we’ve seen him read from items by touching them on a few occasions now. As for eating meat he has no problem with that…
the silverware thing i was wondering about interaction with his mouth, as i know he uses gloves so he doesn’t have as much issues with items and people. i was thinking that if his mouth doesn’t have the same issues, then kissing isn’t off the table for him.
as far as the meat thing, it would mean that non human intimacy isn’t off the table(assuming his mouth has the same issues as the rest of his body), which would be a very good thing for him to realize. though it might have more to do with sapience, which wouldn’t really help him.
I had the same thought about Kwan – she is smart enough to quickly figure out she’s in a mental loop, given even minimal cues from her teammates. Also, Kaycee has recently teamed with her, so probably has a better idea how to work with her than a random other.
Both the goddess and the goblin are unlikely choices, since neither considers Kaycee to be real hero material (though Gifford does show some signs of doing some reconsidering of his prejudices), and in discounting her weaken the team.
Then again, in this state they are probably mostly equal, with the telepaths having the most potential utility, though both Maya & Mudge are generally limited to specific modes. So, I’m back to Kwan…
Or maybe Nadine; if she’s as fast as a phantom as she is normally, she could be very useful indeed.
Well, I am curious indeed as to their next step!
personally i’d not try for kwan, if her issue is simple then she probably will work her own way out, though it could be that part of your mind is working on trapping you, which in kwan’s case would make rescuing her perhaps the most difficult. hence high risk, low reward. high risk in that it may be kwan’s mind they go up against, low reward due to the fact that kwan is smart enough that she might work through it on her own, meaning the risk becomes unnecessary, or getting kwan only a little sooner than helping another.
don’t get me wrong with kwan out of the mental illusion they would have one of the best allies available to them.
