Happy new year, one and all! As mentioned above, I’m looking for ways to increase the profile of Magellan in 2012 so I’m trying out Top Webcomics – a vote aggregator. The more votes Magellan gets from you, the reader, the higher it goes in the list, thereby giving even more people the opportuntity to discover the comic. Now I know it can be a drag clicking on those vote buttons, so as an incentive and as way to say “thanks for voting!” I’ve created some incentive art. This week it’s the cover preview image for what I hope will be a cute ongoing series – Olga & Brelvis – featuring newest Magellan recruits Olga Beh and Brelvis Lonsdog plus their fellow cadet freshmen! I’ll be drawing this series in a more cartoony style – it’s “canon-esque”, meaning that although it’s a bit silly it’ll still be a fairly accurate reflection of who the newer cadets are and will open a small window on some of their adventures. Part 1 next starts week… but don’t let that stop you from voting now to see the cover! Thanks for your vote! 🙂
As mentioned in my previous post there’s currently a sequence involving Hoodoo unfolding over on Crossoverkill – the second page, uploaded today, was drawn by Red Death/Dan of Bad Guy High. The idea behind the “Dirty Dancing” was to give Hoodoo an interest beyond her magic and super-heroing… something with physical and romantic connotations… so I suggested something waaay outside my personal comfort zone and knowledge base… dancing! I’ve never seen Dirty Dancing so watched a climactic scene on YouTube and copied down some poses from that sequence which I pushed at the initially sceptical Red Death – end result? he’s done an awesome job with it, fun and very sexy – check it out! The third update will be drawn by me and goes up on the first Tuesday of 2012.
There’s a new update drawn by myself over on the crossover webcomic Crossoverkill – this page, and the next two were co-written with Dan/The Red Death of Bad Guy High (home site of Captain Perfect). This sequence is a fairly significant character moment for Force Magellan’s Hoodoo which, to some degree, will carry through into the ongoing Magellan series… something we’ll catch up with in Chapter 6 in a few months. Red Death will be drawing the second page which will go up on Thursday (more on that once it goes live) and I’ll be drawing the third page, slated to update the Tuesday after New Year (that’s right, the Crossoverkill crew are taking a week off). Anyway – please check it out!
Just wanted to point you in the direction of the Magellan Miscellany section where I’ve collected together Magellan art and comics which have been seen around the internets over the years but aren’t in the main archive or elsewhere. Recently (as in today) I’ve added three new pieces which you might not have ever seen before or, if so, not for a long time – two alternate covers and a piece of guest art. Check ’em out!
Magellan has been around for a number of years now (since March 2004 to be exact), and in that time it has lived in a variety of places, firstly at free webhost Comic Genesis (once known as Keenspace), moving to Graphic Smash and then a mirror at Web Comics Nation. The decline of the latter two motivated me to set up Magellanverse.com where Magellan now calls home. There is a lot of Magellan stuff scattered across the internet, some of it is out of date, incorrect or superseded so I’m now going through the process of updating, correcting and consolidating or deleting it all. This probably won’t concern the majority of readers who might not even know about the existence of those other sites and that material anyway – but if you do, I’m just giving a heads up that it’ll soon be vanishing from the interwebs and, where possible, replaced with redirections to this website. I’ve already done a major upgrade of the About page which should hopefully help make the comic more accessible for newcomers. Expect more interesting stuff to show up soon!
