After many hours of work on the cover for Lock(e)down I was pretty happy with the end product. Given the response to it, many of you quite liked it too! Reader Thomas asked to have a look at the original artwork for the Lock(e)down cover, so I’ve added it to the Magellan Miscellany section and, as an added bonus, have included the draft as well as some accompanying commentary. It shows the various steps from conception to the final version – check it out here.
One of the great things about having Hoodoo in Crossoverkill is getting to see her drawn by so many talented artists – it’s like having fan art almost every week, and the last few pages are certainly no exception. And also a little bit sexy. OK… very sexy! When Al first suggested the idea of a shower scene in Crossoverkill with Mindmistress and Yuuki (and possibly Hoodoo) some many, many months ago I called dibs on drawing it and, at the time, everyone seemed cool with that. However, after I turned in the script and draft layout, there was some considerable clamouring amongst a few of us for the right to draw these pages (myself included) – it was then that I offered up the suggestion of asking Kittyhawk, who draws Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki to draw them. It was a long shot because, as most readers of SGVY would know, she is very, very busy – however we have been greatly rewarded by her agreeing to take on these pages. Wow! My storyboard drafts were pretty steamy to begin with but Kittyhawk really hits them out of the park. Beautiful work. Believe it or not, the sequence does include some story development… discussions between Hoodoo and Mindmistress hint towards a significant upcoming moment for Hoodoo within the crossover. Anyway, it was fun to write Hoodoo in this scene, she is normally more reserved when in her costume but in this scene she reveals (er, no pun intended) she has a playful nature as well – clearly she also enjoys teasing the somewhat reserved MM. Check it out, starting from here (for two pages with a third… even steamier… page on Tuesday!).
For those of you keeping score at home… another Crossoverkill page by me. This should have really gone up last Thursday but too much other work, including the last page of Redux, conspired against that deadline. So this hopefully makes up, in a small way, for there being only one Magellan page this week. The keen eyed amongst you may wonder if one of the Doppelganger Gang members introduced today – Salome Froste, a furry porn star in her home reality (yes, really) – is any relation to Jaqi Leffee – the feline fashion design tutor at Magellan from the realm of Utopie Félin. As much as I’d like to say they were from the same dimension, sadly they are not; even a brief appraisal of their… er… anatomy would quickly reveal they are not even the same species of homo felis. Had I been keeping abreast of the matter at the time, a small change to the art would have resolved the issue more favourably!
There have been a lot of new characters introduced in the course of the Redux storyline and it’s been a while since I updated the cast page. So I’m happy to announce that Liberator, Twilight, Glom, Maestro, Battlestar, Greyhound, Vera Salt, Dr Lumpkin and yes, Otto and Olga have been added to the already bursting at the seams list of Who’s Who in the Magellanverse. In case you’re wondering, Dr Spooky and Flambe were already in the list, having first appeared in Bad Karma. I also corrected a huge injustice, I discovered poor Karma Joffe (the real one, not the evil future Maya masquerading as Karma) was accidently put in the Villain section when she should have been in Others. Ooops! Also, Gola Beh’s status (under Academic Council) has been updated to [x] (ie. deceased)… but we all know better, right? Check out the cast page – the new entries are under Magellan USA, Others and Villains. With the next story to pay a visit to Locke Island you can rest assured that the list is about to get longer as who lot of bad guys and gals will be featuring in Lock(e)down!
So just getting back to Crossoverkill, the mega-crossover event featuring Hoodoo of Force Magellan (which of course you’re all reading, right?) – the latest page is by moi and features an apocalyptic rampage which I had quite a lot of fun drawing. If you need a primer for Crossoverkill – essentially cross-dimensional versions of the same individual, the Doppelganger Gang are in the process of capturing the avatars of death from across the pan-dimensions, to what end cannot yet be revealed. Hoodoo and a number of other heroes from other webcomics have formed a loose coalition in an attempt to stop them. And yes, the Doppelgangers don’t look much alike… but that’s half the fun and intentional on the part of the Crossoverkill Crew (ie, the contribution webcartoonists). Anyway, check out this page written and drawn by me – there’ll be another one on Thursday too which, combining this week’s two Magellan pages, makes it four xmung pages in four days… yikes!
