Just a heads up that the Wednesday update is running a day behind schedule. In part that was because I was away interstate earlier this week (for my real job!) and lost a vital drawing day. In the interest of full disclosure (and so that I don’t sound like a total slacker) it was also because I became a bit too engrossed over the last weekend in my work on the next set of pages I’m drawing for Crossoverkill… plus I’ve been working on a couple of other feature additions to this site which have been chewing up a lot of time. Anyway, page 5.100 hits the interwebs on Thursday this week! Woo!
I mentioned at the time of Magellan’s seventh anniversary that I would post some old art to this site over the coming week… which then never happened. Part of the reason for that was, apart from varying degrees of distraction and laziness, that I wanted to set up a page specifically for that material rather than just posting stuff randomly to the blog. So anyway, I have managed to get that page set-up and have initially added five items from ye olde days to it. There is in fact a whole heap more material available but I figure those can go up a few at a time over the coming month or three. Basically it will include everything from sketches to non-archived comics to unused covers to concept art and designs… every time it updates I’ll mention it here so that you don’t miss out!
Please check it out – Magellan Miscellany!
Nothing boosts a webcartoonist’s ego like opening up their email inbox and finding some wonderful reader has sent them fan art. And I’m no different – fan art is awesome! But I’m not posting today because I just received some new delicious fan art. I’m not even posting in a jaded or covert attempt to beg for fan art (although, y’know, I do love fan art). No, I just wanted to inform you that I’ve consolidated the previous fan art pages (including the 2009 Art Competition) into one glorious page. Please check it out and marvel at all the awesome art Magellan has inspired!
March 7th marks the seventh anniversary for Magellan – YAY! I loaded page 1.01 to Comic Genesis on that day in 2004. I had a bit of an idea what I was getting myself in for and had spent a number of months doing sketches, developing characters, writing the Wannabe chapter outine and drafting/storyboarding most of the first chapter. I started at one page a week just to get it established and then pushed up to twice weekly. It was around that time that Magellan was aked to join Graphic Smash – the best and worst thing that could have happened. Best, becasue there was a fair bit of prestige attached (in some quarters) to being on Graphic Smash and it greatly increased the profile and awareness of the comic; worst, because being on a prestige site doesn’t matter for much if most of the content is behind a subscription wall and only a small number of people are ever going to read the comic in total (thereby becoming fans and spreading the word). There were other benefits (including meeting lots of other awesome artists) but by and large it took a while for Magellan to recover from that phase. Anyway, we’ve struck out on our own now and I want to focus on the positives instead – so… Happy Anniversary Magellan! Here’s to many more.
After seven years Kaycee and friends are still in their first year at the Academy but I do want to move them forward after this current chapter (I probably really should have set Worst Field Trip Ever in their second year but it’s too late for that now). There are a few other Magellan related features and projects (in addition to Crossoverkill) that I’ll be rolling out over the coming months – more news soon. Later this week I’ll upload some old sketches from my very early Magellan doodlings – so stay tuned!
OK, here’s something very unique and wonderful… a theme song for Force Magellan – written, composed and sung by Miguel Heatwole, a big fan of Magellan and a great friend of mine. Both he and I hold a soft spot for 1970’s Marvel animation, especially their intro songs and tunes and have long joked about having a theme song for Force Magellan were it a TV cartoon show. One day, out of the blue, Miguel presented me with just that – a Force Magellan theme song! I’ve set up a special page for it and have also added some new accompanying art – a picture of Magnus Magellan, the super hero who lends his name to the comic despite having been deceased for three decades. Please check it out…
