Hey, you remember Magellan USA don’t you? This is the New York division who had a brief appearance during the Redux storyline – Liberator, Twilight, Glom, Maestro, Greyhound and Battlestar were all introduced back on page 2 of that story. Flambe had her debut during events of Bad Karma in a cameo on page 4.119. Redux was, of course, Gola/Olga’s story and, apart from Twilight and Liberator we saw very little of Magellan USA – that will be redressed here as they’re going to play some part in Lock(e)down… how much of a part remains to be seen!

redressed or readressed?
“Redressed” as in “remedied”
Looks like fat head has convinced more people to join his crew and are now in control if the Island is attacking.
On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being peace and 10 being kill anything that isn’t on your side) where would Amber alert fit?
I’m not sure a 1 to 10 scale of that type is appropriate. Superheroes always acknowledge the existence of civilians, so even if something isn’t on “our” side doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be killed.
Heck, even in the old Star Treks, Red Alert meant “we are under attack, get to your emergency stations”, not “kill anything you don’t recognize”. Kirk would then direct fire as needful, but not indiscriminately.
How about a 1 to 5 scale, then? Where 5 is peace and 1 is “imminent threat of explosive atomic fiery death”?
In the United States, that is called “DefCon”, short for “Defense Readiness Condition”. 5 is “Peace, but pay attention” and 1 is “Full preparations for massive-scale(nuclear) war.” It was as high as 2 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It went up to 3 after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Thankfully, it has never gone all the way to 1 because that would mean that the final war was on! Send the nukes! Bad news for all.
generally speaking it is at 4, instead of 5, when 9/11 happened it went to 3 (for the 3rd time ever) and didn’t drop until it was scrapped for the new system that never used 4 and 5 (green and blue) until it was scrapped. the whole system is jacked now, as no one knows what is what unless you are in the military (which uses its own rating system).
Amber is a “warning” color in most systems. Generally means “we have reason to be believe things may be going in a not good direction”, or an attack is feared, but not yet certain, so be alert.
Yeah, it’s like Star Trek’s “yellow alert”: be ready for trouble.
Thankyou for the clarification; here in the States the phrase ‘amber alert’ refers to an alert issued in a suspected case of child abduction.
That’s for the name Amber, though, not the color. But good point for xmung – “Amber alert” means something entirely different in the US. So when you start writing screenplays for a US blockbuster, you know, be aware.
well in california it ranges from public service announcements like ‘don’t drink and drive’ to actual child abduction cases, generally speaking it is a public service announcement, so i pretty much ignore the sign and start watching the other cars closely (as they tend to do weird stuff when reading while driving).
I’m surprised they didn’t issue a “Krakatoa Alert.”
great page
meanwhile, what ever happened to hidden dragon and can-can?
We shall see… in a little while!
Don’t forget they were performing a prison transfer! No idea, yet, if they were picking up or dropping off, though . . .
I always find it amusing the tangents that discussions can take… here was thinking that Mary’s snippet of dialogue was the least interesting aspect of the page! But anyway, point taken – think of amber as somewhere between yellow and red alerts.
Why not just call it orange?
Help! The Oranges are revolting!
And they’re attacking us too!
Okay, so we are looking at something like the Homeland Security Advisory System? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeland_Security_Advisory_System
i find it odd that you would have to put a definition of what a sam is in the comic, though i bet if you didn’t have it someone would ask.
Given the apparent confusion caused by “amber alert”, I’m glad I did!
Heck, I was looking for a definition of carpark, but I managed to figure it out through context…
I had hoped you were joking but a brief investigation (ie Google) reveals Twilight should have said ‘parking lot’… my apologies! I shall fix it soon… :/
Following general commentary I’ve changed “amber alert” to “yellow alert” and “car park” to “parking lot”… always interesting to discover the little differences between cultures. In the case of “car park/parking lot” I actually already knew of the latter term, it’s just not widely used here in Oz.
didn’t even catch the car park reference (instead of parking lot) i guess i am too used to watching british stuff (even though i have never been there).
