Bugle: Introduced several pages ago… this powerful, sewer living telepath loves his comics; as we first learned way back in 3.13! Max (TV From Another Planet) is the name of a sci-fi comic I was working on over ten years ago.

Bugle really has been coming across as a competent telepath. Why is he under everyone’s radar? Is it that he’s been actively trying to stay unrecruited by agencies that (I’m sure) would love to have access to his ability?
Most agencies probably already have SOME telepaths ; I suppose the way he looks, it would need active effort to convince them he’s better telepath than what they currently have.
Hmm… maybe. We’ve seen a number of telepaths (even more if you count mentalists like Freya and Maya), so it’s possible they can afford to be choosy. Telepathy is SO useful though, that I’d guess the large number of them is more indicative of them being sought out, like powerhouses are.
BTW, Grace, I see that organization of the Cast information was cleaned up a bit. I was looking for the blurb on the Anti-President, but he got left out of the Villains section? Vanishing Vanessa, as well.
Bugle likes to stay off the radar.
I can see why. He is powerful enough to read through the intervening space of a police precinct in a major cityThat he is skilled enough to pick out two minds is one thing, but I would gather he lives in the sewers not so much for his appearance, but because the sewers act as a form of insulation for his telepathy. If he were on a task force, he would be around people for a lot longer than just the time it takes him to go up and find a comic, and then get back down. And, as powerful as he is, it is quite possible that if he was noticed by some teamed Supers, they might just think he was too great a risk of becoming a villian..
Just my theory based on the little bits we have seen so far, though.
So Burton’s previous victim was fed peanuts and left somewhere tied up, where the kid would not be found until a few days after death. Either that or Maverick showed up even earlier than just when Miasma and DragonClaw showed up at Magellan Academy.
Sorry, confused on how to do the bit.ly thing to see the previous Legacy pages.
Copy and paste them into the web address bar, if I remember correctly?
Yep! Make sure there are no spaces, or no letters missing.
Anaphalaxis; I hope we find out what that word means…!
Like, the literal definition*, or what it means in the context of the story?
*Anaphalaxis: noun (according to Oxford)
An acute allergic reaction to an antigen (e.g. a bee sting) to which the body has become hypersensitive.
I guess we’ll find out soon how it matches up to the story. It’s not a word I’d have associated with Brunton. Maybe he’s better educated than it seemed up till now? Or maybe he’s copycatting the MO from the event Annie is remembering?
It looks like it is a common misspelling of anaphylaxis, which is the extreme allergic reaction that can cause somebody to stop breathing. I think Annie really means a different word here but without knowing what she means I don’t know what it is. I jokingly call these wordo’s
“It’s the Aussie accent, mate!” 😉
The only thing Australian most Americans are familiar with are reruns of Skippy the Bush Kangaroo…! (I hope Grace don’t take this the wrong way.) 😉
Black Rose, I am not familiar with Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, but I do remember the Dot and the Kangaroo series. the Bunyip song from that STILL creeps me out even after all these years.
It’s probably a misspelling of anaphylaxis, which VileTerror defined correctly despite maintaining the misspelling.
hm, I thought I had word checked that one. Will have to correct it!
“Anaphylaxis” does seem to be the correct spelling, but there are apparently some government documents from around the world that use the “anaphalaxis” spelling.
Yeah, looks like I just arsed/assed it up! I do this often… look up a word to make sure I know how to spell it and then use my made up spelling instead! 😀
Well, hey, at least it was a legitimate mistake and not AutoCorrect arsing it up FOR you! I have a love/hate relationship with AutoCorrect. On a real keyboard, I usually spell (almost) everything right. Typing with my thumbs on a smartphone is when I run into trouble, because I forget to double-check before clicking Send.
so previous staged method was an A and now we have B’s is burton some ABC killer type who goes through methods of death by alphbetical order?
Given that he was free when Maverick tracked him down and executed him, I suppose he never did more of such attention-grabbing crimes or he’d be back in jail very quickly and not let out for a very long time.
Or maybe he got smarter and managed to avoid capture until Maverick came along and decided not to bother with half-measures.
Dang! I’d forgotten that detail😞 What was he doing out in 2017? Shouldn’t he have been in prison?
Good question! I guess 15 years is a bit short for murder. Maybe he got it shortened on account of good behavior, psychological progress or something? Or did he simply flee?
I think I remember something about an insanity plea? For some reason it’s generally easier to escape mental institutions than prisons in fiction.
You don’t recall where? It’s not ringing a bell for me. Insanity seems like it would be difficult for the defense to successfully use in this case.
In the page http://magellanverse.com/4-31/ Annie calls burton a “sicko” and by extension “psycho” (a lame one). So, maybe? I seem to recall some cadet, not Kaycee, sitting on a plane and reading that a villain from said cadets past was just let out of prison. If that did happen then maybe Kaycee mentioned Burtons whereabouts in the same conversation?
Not saying either of you are wrong, just that the reference is not jogging my memory (not the strongest). I’ll dig around the archives some more to see if I can find anything.
Thanks for the callback to that specific page! I started reading the comic right around that time… I still get mixed feels when i re-read that page 😢
I don’t remember exactly where I started reading, but I do remember that for quite some time that page gave me more than mixed feelings: it made me downright uneasy. At some point we got to http://magellanverse.com/service/, which made me feel better. But it was not until even more of this epic was completed and I read it carefully all the way through that I really understood how Annie ended up being that rude in that moment.
The key page for perspective on that is really http://magellanverse.com/coffee/. Note that Annie, even to Freya, refuses to mention why she owes Kaycee an apology. She is ashamed of that moment, and that makes all the difference.
Sounds like the first time he only killed one person too… I wonder if it’s a coincidence that he decided to kill one for A and two for B?
If that’s the case I really wonder what he was planning to do when he reaches X. I mean, he would certainly start to run out of words sooner, but I already have trouble thinking of one way to kill that starts with x, let alone twenty-four…
C’mon, Annie, Bugle physically can’t turn his mind-reading off when you’re close by. That’s why he lives in the sewer. Don’t call him creepy for something beyond his control.
In other notes… kidnapping someone else’s dog aside, Bugle seems like a generally good guy. I hope somehow he manages to get a pet or friend, ideally one that can survive down there with him.
You know, it can be creepy..saying it is wrong is where she should not be stepping. Something can be creepy and it not be meant in a bad way. I have been told that people find it creepy when step up behind them and they didn’t hear me, even though I wear heavy boots and walk with a cane. It is beyond my control that people do not hear me walking, even when I try to make noise..but I can totally see how it can be creepy.
People used to tell me that I walked too loudly. Then they got spooked when I learned to walk silently. Make up your mind people! Do you want the big guy to make noise when he goes around or not? Should I wear a bell?
