Looking for a few quotable comments about Bad Karma
As you probably noticed, I’m (slowly) publishing Magellan chapters and stories as collected volume ebooks on Issuu. This process is a stepping stone to (finally) printing those books. For the moment, it’s an extra way that people can access and read the comic, particularly for those not into the “download-page-by-page” process of webcomics. Right now, I’m finalising Bad Karma (part 2) – that is, from pages 151 through 300.
Since I’m designing these volumes as if they were physical books, I’m including back covers – which have several short non-spoiler quotes by readers about the comic and/or story.
For example, here are the quotes from the back jacket of The Great Leap Forward…

Bad Karma is really the story where Magellan starts to take off. The world-building really starts to grow, with everything from psychic powers to magic to technology finding a place, and the multiple storylines are juggled so masterfully it never feels like one is dragging. The plot twists will keep the reader keep guessing to the very end as to what will happen….and if everyone is going to make it out alive!

I feel like I should be able to write something quotable, that most probably I have even already done so, somewhere in the comments from long ago. Maybe also in some comment thread or forum thread elsewhere. I do consider Magellan as joint winner of the best long thing I’ve ever read, along with Sam&Fuzzy, both webcomics beating out all my favorite “normal” sets of books: Harry Potter, Tales of the Otori (Lian Hearn) and Earth’s Children (Jean M. Auel). Mangas aren’t quite the same, they run long but they seldom have several separate long parts. Many other webcomics not to mention old comics (Tintin, Asterix, Modesty Blaise) have the same difference that makes me not quite put them in this group of long content.
So for Magellan as a whole, maybe that: “The best long thing I’ve ever read – and I enjoy reading long things!”
But for Bad Karma specifically, right now, I’m failing. When it comes to Lock(e)down I’ll probably have an easier time.

Yeah, the lost comments are really unfortunate, especially for things such as this. Hopefully enough of us are prolific enough, on our re-reads, that in time we will once again have a sizeable set of comments to draw from. And maybe even better quality, I do like to think that I’m a better writer nowadays then a decade ago 🙂

It’s a pleasure. I started reading mainstream comic books (Marvel & DC) in the early 70’s, surged in the 90’s, but have mostly stayed away from the comic book medium since the early 2000’s. Constant tie-ins and poor stories were a turn-off. Magellan has been a breath of fresh air and is one of my favorite all-time web comics. It is definitely my hands-down favorite superhero story. I find myself rooting for Kasey and her friends as if they were real people. Thank you for your long-term and dedicated efforts on this comic.
Thanks – you’re welcome. I started reading comics in the mid-1980s and just loved the interconnectedness of the Marvel stuff. Definitely rubbed off on me with Magellan.
Allow me to paraphrase, or rather add on to that: “I find myself rooting for these heroes as if they were real people – nay, as if they were my friends!”. Definitely one of the standout qualities of Magellan. It is something that seems to happen more easily with the extreme long-format storytelling that is decade-or-longer webcomics, yet even among these Magellan is top notch. I believe a key ingredient is the deeply realistic character portrayals.
