Re-reading through this has reminded me, this read through I picked up that Miasma comments that she could never figure out how Kacey always seemed to be able to figure out that she was in an illusion. Obviously, this is no small feat given how capable Miasma was and the implication that Kacey in both time lines had this capability. Its likely that future-Maverick never had the same interactions with Vostok and the side-effects this has (mentioned later in the chapter). So, This leads me to contemplate what is the origin of this resistance? Is it a product of her natural willpower and determination? Her mindset? Training? Perhaps its a quirk of her trauma and experiences at the hands of a certain clown? Or maybe it’s a hitherto undiscovered power.
In this instance her escape is in part due to the training Vostok has given her, and, how she was rescued from Miasmas illusion. But, there is a possibility that this has combined well with the previously mentioned knack that Kacey has.
Remember that Kaycee resisted Maya’s Mojo the first time they met, long before she had encountered Vostok. Back on her first day on the island, when Maya was attacking other students and coercing them to attack Charisma.
Nadine immediately fell for the trick and started to do what Maya wanted her to. Kaycee correctly declared the illusion implausible and therefore likely to be a mental attack.
Maya and Miasma both talked about needing to keep their illusions logical or people start to fight them. Kaycee appears to be especially good at this–notably, most people seem to lose track of what they were doing before, so the illusion needs internal logic but doesn’t have to connect too much with reality. Kaycee is better at recognizing when the illusory situation comes out of nowhere or otherwise follows dream logic.
The only time I remember it is way back in Great Leap Forward, 2.50 http://magellanverse.com/comic/muh2/
It worked quite well then… perhaps her experience with it might give her more resistance now, but recall that merely *knowing* it is an illusion is NOT protection against it.
YES PURE YES, loving this so much on my reread, such an awesome moment.

I concur. Well summed up.
Also, makes me wonder how susceptible Rochelle is. I can’t recall if we’ve seen her mind mojo’d by Maya.
