Oof.
Yeah . . . let’s see . . . Kwan and Kaycee are both GREAT planners. Kwan has a huge advantage in general intellect, but Kaycee is more capable of understanding emotional cues and social behaviour in an innate context. Kwan would predict that Kaycee knows that much, though, and would do her best to remain as emotionally distant as possible . . . but given the revelations in Chapter 7, it’s possible that Kwan would be distracted by Kaycee by default, even without Kaycee intentionally trying to “wile” her way in to Kwan’s emotional weak spot.
It would really come down to teammates, I think. Kaycee has won over a couple of other Cadets and made close friends, who likely trust her implicitly. But if Kaycee was saddled with Maya . . . well, the animosity there might destabilize the team too much to be successful. Alternatively, Maya might try extra hard to win, feeling that Jones will drag her down otherwise. In either case, Kwan would likely calculate the probabilities of those scenarios and assign a numerical value to them for statistical likelihood. Kaycee, in turn, would plan around the plan of knowing Kwan would analyze every angle, and then intentionally try to do something unpredictable and “lolrandum” just to try and upset Kwan’s calculations.
UGH! It’s like chess, but way more complicated! I don’t know what would happen.
If I were writing the scene, I would likely just fall back on to my game design background, stat out some attributes and skill values for the two of them, and then let dice decide fate. Then write the narrative around the results.
Kwan and Jones make such a great team. Though I would love to see them pitched against each other in a similar exercise.
