…Matter 52
This is the Wednesday update, there was an update on Sunday, click the Previous button to see that page.
Finding Alex: So yeah, this is a real bummer of a page. Long time readers knew it was coming (this is a prequel after all!) but that doesn’t make it any easier. I wanted to strike the right balance, so that it was emotional without being exploitative, hope I succeeded.
Next update: Sunday August 18, 2019: Al Brunton…
🙍… Jeez… yeah, I think you nailed it 😔
It’s the worst part for law enforcement, I’m sure, having to come across the scene of such a heinous crime.
But yeah, we knew it was going to be tragic for Alex. Doesn’t make it any easier. And Grace, I think you did well in the depiction. Somebody who was going for exploitation would have had the broken neck in-panel.
It is stuff like this that causes cops in real life to need PTSD treatments. Back in 2002, it was not so well recognized as it is today, and a lot of the affected police officers just wanted to seem tough, right up to the time they commit suicide. Thankfully, we know Diane does not suffer that fate. Also, sadly, we know Diane does not suffer that fate.
It’s cool to see the art in not-quite-done stage, briefly, as a glimpse into the process.
You do not need super-vision to realize what happened here. It may help the investigation, but it sure won’t help either person in that room now.
Think you hit the right level of showing what happened, without really SHOWING what happened.
Yeah, definitely hit the right balance of showing and implying, with enough context that what’s implied is in some ways worse than showing something more explicit. The remarks about PTSD in first-responders ring true as well.
