…Matter 53
Still need to finalise shading/highlights, etc…
This is the Sunday update, there was an update on Wednesday, click the Previous button to see that page.
Al Brunton: If you thought you knew everything about this story… think again!
Next update: Sunday August 25, 2019: I’d love to give you an update on Wednesday but I’ll be away travelling for much of next week so Sunday it will have to be…
second personality?
Or mind control or possession. Or just jerking ’em around. A telepath should be able to sort it out.
I had gotten the fanciful idea that some other entity might be pulling his strings many pages ago, but it’d be a little weird that such a particular was either not known or mentioned all these years later.
Huh. Definitely was not expecting him to have DID or the like, but that also might be an explanation for why he waited two months. Perhaps the main personality didn’t let the violent secondary one emerge for whatever reason.
Of course, as Go!Anna says, he might just be jerking them around for the sympathy points so they don’t kick the shit out of him for being a child-killer.
She’ll be safe now. Sure, until she goes on some field trips at Magellan Academy.
Seeing the date the next page is scheduled makes sense, but I can’t help feeling disappointed, mainly because with the periodic Wednesday updates, I was hoping a page would pop up on my birthday (the 21st). It’s ridiculous for me to be selfish like that, though.
I would say: Stick to once a week, but keep drawing whenever you can/want until you have a decent buffer to fill up when you’re absent (12 or 15 pages)
Maybe a chroner tried to use Brunton to terminate future Maverick?
I think I remember something similar from an old comments post… Here’s hoping those get restored in the near future! 🥂
Or maybe he got amnesia because of the shovel on the head – in which case, are they going to be (more) annoying to Go!Anna?

So… not your average, run of the mill clown mask
Ahhh! I am visiting Sydney for the first time and I just met Tom Bass! https://imgur.com/a/RB5Qq5z I’ve been reading since “It’s only ten meters!” (and L&Z before that) and I keep getting hints of your stuff around town, but this was really cool!
Ha, yeah that is a crazy cool sculpture – never knew it was by someone called Tom Bass!
1. We never did learn much about “the Clown guy” until now, specifically what happened after Go!Anna stopped him. Do we even know he was tried? Convicted? Incarcerated? Still alive or not? There’s a lot of content here that the two main characters (as far as I’m concerned, sorry Character Assassins) have been acting upon, constantly and even unconsciously, the whole time.
2. I enjoy the preliminary art glimpses. If it’s not something you want to do as an ongoing feature, maybe a special case study could be made available. Not everyone is fascinated by things like panel layout options, whether you spot blacks before inking (evidently not), or color choices as a form of shading, but I am.
I have an instance or two of it over on my Patreon, but yeah, I don’t want to make a habit of it in the main comic. I always figure if I have the line art finished I might as well upload it so the update technically isn’t late. 😀
He’s alive as far as I know, because when Kaycee talks to Maverick, she (Maverick) mentions how Al Brunton got out and killed her mother. http://magellanverse.com/comic/boilerplate/
As for if he got incarcerated or not, no idea.
Personally, I think it’s the mask he wears that has something to do with it. If he has DID or whatever else, it might come to play from there…
I’m reminded of the Oscar Wilde quote (which could work with a lot of superheroes as well): “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.”
I was actually aware that we did not quite know the fate of this clown and looking forward to learning about it. Oftentimes you do surprise me, but not this time… well, I guess there is still room for surprises.
Safe travels, dear Grace. See you Sunday! 🙂
Lively comments section… that was something I didn’t realize I was missing during the hiatus 😐 Glad to see interest in the comic hasn’t flagged!
And a lot of new people commenting too. I might not respond to every comment but I do appreciate them all very much!
Someone might be pulling the strings, but who? He sure kept chanting the “B is for buried alive” while fighting Go!anna so maybe a hypnotist? It’s different than Maya’s as she could make people see things but never directly make them do stuff. This guy might have been hypnotized both when he kidnapped the kids and their mother.
Looks like the work of a serial killer who uses a clown as his proxy.
… Ah.
If the telekinetic killer personality is not the dominant personality … then yeah, that might explain the interval between murders.
I’m with Axiluvia here. My first thought upon reading his confusion was that the mask itself is the culprit, and Brunton is just the vehicle it needs to get around.
hmmm very interesting. I knew he’d been put in jail, but this definitely opens up more opportunities. Either Multiple Personalities, or because he’s mild T.K, he could be vulnerable to someone controlling him.
Perhaps we’ll learn more in the present timeline when we get back to that.
This can only make it worse for Annie. Since no one else was there, the police can argue that she staged the entire scene and picked a helpless rando to be her scapegoat.
Kaycee was there, she knows it was Burton, and there’s no denying Alex was her sister. The police would have a hard timing explaining why she ‘s taking Go!Anna’s side. And that’s before technical evidence of course.
My first guess was that it’s got something to do with that TK inhibitor. Maybe whatever makes him psycho and makes him telekinetic is the same thing, and both are now blocked.
But a split personality taking over once a month to explain the murder timing is a good candidate too.
Guess this may mean that future Kaycee DID kill an innocent man after all?
She killed him after he killed her mother. How legally responsible Al is for that is yet to be seen.
Sounds like a long list of masks that transforms the personality of its wearer, like The Mask and a couple of horror films I saw in the 1980’s that I can’t think of the names of now, even one Bugs Bunny-Elmer Fudd cartoon. A person puts on the magical (maybe demon-possessed) piece of attire and his personality is altered, often accompanied by some sort of superhuman ability, from minor to reality warping (such as in The Mask movie). Maybe that is going on here. Do not let anyone touch the man’s clown costume.
DEMONS? A forgettable Italian horror film that has the thematic start of an evil mask that turns the wearer into a demon. After the initial turn, it works more like an infectious zombie story. I would have been inclined to discount such a theory, but Grace has already surprised me in this storyline, so… maybe?
Heh, or like Majora’s Mask from the Legend of Zelda series games!
Rereading this comment has me thinking of Doctor Fate. If someone puts on the Helmet of Fate, the Lord of Order, Nabu, that inhabits the helmet, takes over and controls the body and does all his magic until Nabu chooses to become idle again by removing the helmet himself.
