…Matter 56
Ken Spence, I presume?: If you’ve been reading for a while, you’ll know this is Kens Spence… a trainer at Magellan Academy – former super-hero Nitro-Man and member of the Academic Council. You’ll also know, he and Annie don’t see eye-to-eye on her choices!
Locke Island: This is the floating prison of choice for super-powered crims. In fact we had a whole story about it.
Next update: Sunday September 15, 2019: Special visit…
Count me in as “never going to complain about the wait for a page.” You’ve already exceeded the page count of 95% of comics authors for a single title, and exceeded the quality mark for actually-coherent story over … um, I actually can’t think of anyone you haven’t outshone for that specific thing.
Anyway, now it’s Ken’s chance to challenge my summary judgment of him in a previous comment. Jerk with a heart of gold or with a heart of jerk? I’ve been wondering about that for a while.
Ken Spence: former Nitro-Man? Sure, he is not active since losing his legs, but he lost his legs, not his power. (Upcoming back story perhaps?) Annie should be glad he has only blasted her with his mouth. Mind you, she has not been shown to do anything that deserves the more energetic blasting.
Aww… the surprise guest was only Ken?!
Kidding 😜! Ken’s fine, but I WAS hoping it was going to be a telepath (known, or knewn 😀)
Uh-hu, here comes the secret lovechild of Professor X & Sergeant Rock…:P
Ken is Lord Voldemort?? 😱
*NOW* I get it 🙄😂
Has it been addressed why Nitro Man never got any limb regrowth/cybernetics? It feels like there’s got to be a magic/super/technology capable of filling that need.
Does he look mildly apologetic?
More deeply troubled to me, but he was a bit of a pill.
I know Spence is a good man at heart and is only tough because he wants supers to be worthy of the name… but he does make it difficult to like him.
…
My first thought on seeing the last panel was, “Ugh, ambush! This guy again.”
Then I felt a little guilty.
Third panel:
up to judge >>> up to the judge
Thanks! Will get it fixed.
I just realized something, more relevant to main timeframe of the comic, in 6.336 Charisma said there are 3 classmates in love with Kaycee, now one is probably Brelvis, but even before the end of Bad Karma Charisma targeted Kaycee, towards most that are physically normal or have abilities that don’t directly contribute to fighting, she either ignores or shows a general disdain for, but Kaycee, gets special attention from her. Could she deep down be finding Kaycee and her tenacity attractive, which is conflicting with her ego and arrogance as she normally would consider norms beneath her? Which would compound every time Kaycee beats her… Oh certainly initially she probably felt that a norm being let into Magellan was an assault on her pride, but if that was it her attitudes would be more like Lyta in not really acknowledging her except when necessary.
What’s more is that Maverick specifically let slip that in her timeline at some point, she and Charisma became at least friends, and based on the story of how their Chang and Mia fell, that happens by their 3rd year, the way she handled “young” Charisma, minimizing how long she would have to deal with her, almost immediately, combined with the vybe, Freya Foster got off of her…
“combined with the vybe, Freya Foster got off of her…”
Which page are you referring to here? I’ve got my own theory about who those cadets are, but I’m happy to entertain others, esp. if backed up with references 🙂
4.185 “her grief is so raw, her anger barely contained” yes they lost a lot, but if she was compartmentalizing her emotions as it seems she was, that means something at least briefly brought it into focus, she tazed an already restrained Charisma not long before, That wasn’t an act of caution Billy is similarly powerful, and future Billy far more skilled, that was pushing her to the side, Maveric having been broken before would know more than any of them what would break her again, and avoided it.
For others interested in following along, that whole sequence, starting with the appearance of the chroners in 4.141 is worth re-reading.
I remember when I first re-read that confrontation between (present) Bill and Charisma and the chroners, thinking that Maverick’s tazing of her made sense, given her knowledge of what a wildcard she represented. She knows the danger that Miasma and Dragonklaw pose to the island, and she can’t afford the distraction of wrestling or reasoning with Charisma. And the thing that brought Maverick’s emotions out seems to have just been the memory of Rochelle’s death, and the associated one of all the other lives lost, while recognizing the possibility of it happening again.
Which is not to deny the possibility that you’re right 😉
So who do you think the three are?
I will grant that there were tactical reasons to taze Charisma but to figure out who the three suiters are I am also trying to work out who’s attitudes toward Kaycee have changed, now we know one of them is likely Brevlis, but the other two? We can rule out Mia for obvious reasons, Nadine hasnt changed in how she interacts with Kaycee, Rochelle you would never know, side effect of her being a hyper analytical character, Fatima maybe but she responds to a different set of social norms and body language, so the only bit that we can really take as an indication from her is her defense of Kaycee as being really good and a human norm at the meeting for students that need help adjusting to human social structure at the begining of worst fieldtrip, which can be taken as admiration pretty easily too, Bill hasnt made any obvious indications either way, Mudge is well Mudge, most others dont interact with Kaycee much, so my most probable three are Brelvis, Fatima and Charisma.
Your original guess was Billy, Brelvis, and Fatima, so you’re still pretty close to that, just that you’ve started to look for more clues outside that sequence and chapter. I’m hoping that Grace will bring that back into the story in the not-distant future.
LIS back then, Billy and Brelvis seem like the two “Obvious” choices (and also that that is not a guarantee that they are correct). Back then, I really had no clue who the third cadet could be, but I’ve started leaning towards someone recently.. just earlier this year, in fact 😉
Who you leaning towards for #3? The reason why Brelvis is strongest on the list, is because he was certainly that way initially, as Brian, and the most likely person who he would shift his interests to is a hyper sensitive telepath, which isn’t to say that isn’t possible, but that’s something that would immediately make things awkward, which hasn’t seemed to have happened. I no longer count Billy because he’s always been like that and has mostly just been trying to reign in Charisma, which for all we know he may have been specifically instructed to do.
… 😣
Nadine
😌
I was hoping to hold onto that until the truth or fiction of it was demonstrated, but I didn’t want to be coy when you’ve been open about your own ideas.
Really, it could be just about any of the participants in the mind-meld, although I would rule out Maya. Chiq, Lyta, Giff, and Jenna seem like long shots to me, and Rochelle slightly less so.
i can see that, with the mini story with the fast club and streaker force, but
OH! Grace! BTW… The link that apparently should be pointing to Lock(e)down, is instead pointing right back to TTTM.
Oh! Oh! And, speaking of Legacy (weren’t we?)… I know you’ve got a lot on your plate, but one more thing to put on the To Do list ought to be collecting all the Legacy pages as a threaded story and putting it in the Tales section.
Pretty please? 🙏
Sorry, that one somehow dropped off the immediate To Do List. Will look at it, and some other outstanding items, over this week.It would be good to have everything back to “normal” by the time I finish The Things That Matter.
Thanks, fixed!
