…Matter 60
Antepenultimate page: I screwed up last week when I said #59 was the penultimate page. Turns out there are still two more pages to go. (Yay?) Anyway, there are a couple narrative boxes I need to tick off before this story finishes. One of them was to touch base with Bugle.
Cop Shop: BTW, this is Australian slang for police station. Not sure if it is used elsewhere.
I must say Bugle surprises me in a good way. I didn’t think he was brave enough to make such a stand. And of course he is right.
I don’t remember hearing “cop shop” when I was living in Adelaide – and that’s in Australia. I’ll have to check with my wife, who unlike me is Australian born.
So, that kinda played out the way I thought. Bugle has some principles that he’s not willing to compromise, and Go!Anna’s request is firmly rebuffed. My theory hinged on an (imagined?) tension I thought I detected in their interaction in Ch.3 compared to earlier in TTTM. I thought that maybe Annie’s callous plan to use Bugle to get Brunton the punishment she thinks he deserves might have led to a less friendly relationship. That’s what overthinking does 🤷♂️
Best wishes for your dad and family, Grace.
Here in the US, the term “Cop Shop” is not unknown.
“Cop shop” is heard in Canada too.
Hoping for the best for your family.
Good for Bugle!
And good for the rest of the world that the killer clown stays bottled up for as long as possible.
… well, except he will eventually get out (two years after Kaycee will finish academy) and murder Kaycee’s mother won’t he? See 4.292 …
*nods* That’s what happened (happens?) in the original timeline, but there’s no way to know how it will play out in this one. Kaycee having foreknowledge of it from Maverick ought to make it likely to end up differently.
Speaking of *this* timeline, shouldn’t we be getting to Master Drake and the Vrax Japh? I mean, that plot device seems like it should be taking up a LOT of attention from the people in the know at Magellan.
Who did end up in the know about it. Future Chen and Maya, but did any Magellan peeps find out?
Hmm… Assuming you’re talking about the Vrax Japh: Force Magellan, Oz Magellan, Dr. Phillos, and (presumably) the Council, at least. Read the last twenty or so pages of Ch. 4. It might have come up again later, but I can’t recall for sure. If you mean about Kaycee, I think it’s just Freya.
Kaycee could get her mother to move,
@ Xmung: I hope your father makes it through this. I really do. All the best to you and yours!
I kind of love that in this world where everything is so registered and filed and stamped with a final check regarding superheroes and the way powers are handled that there’s still someone like Bugle, who lives off the radar and honestly is happy just the way he is. Not everyone wants to be out there facing bad guys. This guy just wants to live in the sewer, have a friend or two he can help, and eat the occasional rate.
Also, wow, I knew that Go!Anna could be a bit ruthless, but deliberately stirring up an alternate personality just to give “proper punishment” to the guy seems like a dickish move, especially when it’s currently dormant and seems likely to stay that way. That just seems like kicking the hornet’s nest for no reason to me.
I might be wrong, but I think Annie is pursuing every possible option to get him a cell at Locke Island rather than in some less safe facility mostly to make very sure he doesn’t get out.
My stance is that Bugle has the right answer in terms of punishment, but Brunton should be at Locke island for public safety. (And I firmly believe that these are two different aspects of imprisonment that need not, indeed should not, be tightly connected.) If the only way to get the safe outcome is to drag the killer persona out then I say go for it… but do talk to the actually a victim side of Brunton first. And put that one back in charge after the trial. Oh, and Locke should probably have a whole section for similar cases, where people with dangerous alter egos can be among peers rather than among the full-time criminals.
Then again, I don’t expect it to be that simple. Magellanverse is a realistic world, with bureaucracy and public opinion and other complex roadblocks to get in the way, not to mention not entirely unlimited resources (though both Locke and Magellan do seem to have rather roomy budgets).
Xmung. I can’t seem to get onto your email and I wanted to show you my new website that’s up and hopefully talk business about advertising on each others sites. You can contact me at my email and give me your answer.

Cool – since you have a superhero webcomic you should see about getting into the Collective of Superheroes, that will be a much better avenue of exposure for you https://collectiveofheroes.net/contact/
Sorry for the screw-up. Here’s the URL; http://www.smorty-smythe.ca

Xmung, can we pretty please have Bugle and Vostok meet at some point? Two near god-level telepaths, one a kind neutral good and the other a selfish chaotic neutral… could be fun!
Yes, it would be fun! Side quest or voting incentive I guess!
I think this would also be a fun voting incentive too!
Not sure how you get the idea Bugle is a “near god-level telepath”
He seems to be a pretty typical, albeit experienced, sort really.
He can read minds over fairly long distances, not something we’ve seen any other Magellan telepath do….
Bugle probably has a 250-300 meter radius (he hangs out pretty close to the police station). Vostok is way stronger by comparison.
Ah geez. Love & solidarity from this guy, um, despite not knowing one another.
Take time to be with your family, Grace, and take care of yourself.
Oh Grace, you have my deepest sympathies. Rest assured we will all be waiting here for however long it takes you to get pages out. Take time for self-care and know that my prayers are with you and your family.
Take care Grace, life sucks sometimes, but that’s what makes the good parts all the more important to cherish.
Dire news, dear Grace. It is great to hear that you have something that can occupy your hands and mind and give you a bit of solace. To all of your family: take care of each other as well as yourselves.
Grace, do what you have to both for your father and for your state of mind. I have been there myself in the year before my mother passed. I cannot do more than offer sympathy for what you are going through. Just take care of yourself, OK?
As I think many of us have said time over; Take care of you. We’ll happily wait for a page if it means you’re in a good space, and family is incredibly important.
Hoping for the best for you and your father.
