This is the Wednesday update – click the back button to see the Sunday update!
Jupiter!: I have had a fair bit of fun working on these space scenes. As a kid I was fascinated by stars and planets, and it remains a deep desire (likely never to be fulfilled) to see those worlds first hand. Fortunately, the robotic exploration of our solar system has given me many awesome reference pics of the planets, and their moons, which I can use for scenes just like these!
So… the concept for the atmosphere scoop is that it uses an artificial micro black hole to create a portal capable of syphoning the gas direct to Earth, no transport required.
Do Dr Beatrix Grainger and Bruce-93 suffer from “Wrong-place-wrong-time-itis” this time? You’ll have to see the next update to find out!
Coming soon: Families/Cемьи featuring Red Vlad, Comrade Katya, Epoch, and Charisma will be the next voter incentive story… kicking off March. Stay tuned!
Next update: Sunday, February 16, 2020: Rarg-attack!!
“those self-interested Magellan tech-elites”. Interesting. I believe this guy is only the second psychic we’ve seen so far?
’cause he’s got projection powers.
*badum tss*
Har😁
I wonder how these folks are doing in the chroner’s timeline?
In lieu of Dragonklaw and Miasma surely some other big attacks on Magellan island, that in this timeline were somehow hindered (or just didn’t make it into the comic), have been happening. I guess Dr Beatrix and Bruce-93 might have stayed on Magellan a bit longer, until some other tipping point, at which they then happened into some other career opportunity. Probably with somewhat similar risks though, see below. They just know too much to not be living “in interesting times”.
It’s possible that in the chroner’s timeline, they ALSO helped the mission on Jupiter, just later.
Probably much better, at least up until the problems caused by Miasma and DragonKlaw in the original timeline. Maybe they fared OK, maybe not.
Well, when you have skills and knowledge on the leading edge, perhaps even on the bleeding edge… I guess it is easier said than done to find a job where you can apply those skills without significant risks. That’s mostly true even in our world, just that the risks here are generally to do with job safety, finances and keeping your sanity… while in Magellanverse it seems that you are likely to get caught up in more or less alien or supernatural happenings.
So, you two… how’s that nice, peaceful job working out for you?
“Raarg. Rrarg. Rrarrg.”
Translation: “Thanks for the wormhole to your Homeworld, suckers!”
I don’t think that wormhole will be usable for transporting anything bigger than hydrogen. Hopefully.
😬
At megatons per second, the hydrogen molecules are not going even close to single-file through that wormhole. A ton of hydrogen is a large volume, one or five or ten million of those… Bigger things will fit. On the other hand, there should be a filter involved in order to get reasonably pure hydrogen, which should stop everything that isn’t hydrogen. But the Rarg might take that out. Then again, maybe the Rarg are humongous, so they still don’t fit through the wormhole.
It’s possible the usable shape of the wormhole is circle (or even weirder shape) – meaning, that the total cross-section is bigger but that one dimension is not much bigger than hydrogen molecule. Or anything going through the wormhole experiences gravitation and/or radiation too big for anything live to survive.
Grace, that scene we just had with VM II and Maverick briefing Force Magellan on future events… You can stretch that scene out into eternity to support any storyline you ever make!
Pretty much – and I think most main stories since Bad Karma have more or less only existed in part or entirely due to the knock on effects of that story.
PLEASE stop saying “mega-tonne”! 1 million tonnes of hydrogen in liquid form has a volume of about 14 million cubic meters–or 1 square kilometer 14 meters deep! And from the dialogue, they may have pumped as much as 20 times that much before cutoff. Unless they actually store it inside the singularity, where can they put it all?
Yeah, I realised after I got this up and running that I really should have been saying megalitre… I think we can presume they will be compressing it at the other end. Hope that makes some kind of difference??? 😬
Millions of tons of compressed hydrogen?! Better make damned sure it’s stored well away from anything that might make a spark.
—>BOOM<---
Firstly, well away from any oxygen! Which is easier than you’d think, just flush your bottles with nitrogen before filling.
Large amounts of gas are normally highly compressed, as it indeed makes a large difference in the storage volume required, but if that volume number is for the liquid then it’s pretty much as compressed as it will ever be. On the other hand, if you’re going interplanetary to make some revolutionary impact, shoot for megatons per day at least. We can furthermore assume that they do not intend to have the wormhole open continuosly and megatons per second when running thus makes perfect sense. They need a giant storage unit earth-side though, that’s for sure.
