Euro-Magellan just can’t catch a break – part 3&4!: At this point I’m not sure if the constant deaths of characters isn’t just depressing and/or outright un-entertaining… and, of course, it’s just going to get worse over the next 20 pages or so… but I hope you can stick with me!!
Patrons: Over on Patreon page 112 is now up…
Next update: Wednesday April 1, 2021: Padma strikes back (no joke!)
I do hope Hans survives. As has been pointed out in the comments before, his ability might be key in how this turns out.
This is getting rather depressing, but if your payoff is the eradication of the Rarg homeworld I’m cool with that.
No no no. We already know that the payoff is the eradication of the human homeworld.
I’m kind of divorced from any stakes in this conflict due to the sheer comedy of these deaths and the volume of them. Paradoximan was literally defeated by a rock and the splatting of the heavy hitters is almost cartoony. Doesn’t make it bad, don’t get me wrong, personally I just find it hard to take seriously at the current part of the story.
While the deaths are a bummer, I’m just hoping that the end result is cathartic enough to make it all worth it. Whether that means some of the heroes stay dead or not because of how far back they turn time is something I can’t predict, but I hope at least a few deaths get undone.
Also I’m just gonna call it: Paradoximan is a goner. Hans either isn’t going to have enough time and/or enough vitality from his counterparts to heal him to a point of stability or he’ll be killed before he completes the process. Just getting him stable on a battlefield is asking for a lot and it’s not like they even have a safe zone they can drop his unconscious body off in.
I see the superheroes become puddles and my first thought is Puddles Pity Party. Maybe he can sing at their memorial ceremony.
Dangit, with power nullification tech in existence, why any super would dare to fly above 50 feet is a mystery to me. I can see why Magellan keeps that tech restricted…
20 more pages of this massacre sounds like a lot, it seems to me that we’re quite close to the end of the world that we’ve already seen. As soon as that jet crashes and the main characters join back up with the other main characters, we’re pretty much there, are we not?
Like NoGravy, I feel pretty… detached? Since the world ended, there needs to be a reset or all future stories will need to be set in the past or in an alternate future. Any of the three means that what happens now is rather unlikely to have a lasting effect, and all my mind is occupied with is the reset: how does it happen, which important characters are saved and lost, which memories are saved and lost… then, what kind of world will Magellanverse be after this and what kind of stories will we get to read? I have a pessimistic mind, it leaves little room for appreciating the current when there are large questions about the future.
I’ll keep reading until those large questions about the future are largely answered. Then, when I can appreciate it, I’ll have to re-read this chapter. And in the grand scheme of things, 20 pages is not that much, I’ve already been through a hundred pages of this excruciating wait. It is certainly my least favorite Magellanverse story or chapter so far. Still, less of a torture than reading Exvulnerum 😛 (I’ve considered to take a break and come back when I can binge all the way to the resolution, but somehow have not ended up doing that.)
well, if nothing else, it proves that “nobody has plot armor.” I’m willing to keep reading, to watch how Grace handles having to create an entirely new cast, if that’s what happens.
I disagree. Plot armour, like almost everything, is not binary: other than in extreme cases (which admittedly are very common) it does not entirely preclude a characters death. It just means (IMHO) you can’t kill them without seriously damaging the plot. What creates the situation that nobody has plot armour, to me, is that (large parts of) the established plot can go on no matter who dies. Still very true of this comic. However, if either Kaycee or Annie dies at this point, the remaining one has quite a bit of plot armour. If we were to lose both of them I think the plot would get very damaged.
It’s all moot though, since the entire planet and all of humanity gets erased pretty soon. There is nothing left, no people that can make up a new cast and nowhere they could live. There’s not even ancient artifacts left, there’s only a black hole.
It’s getting really hard to care about all these deaths at this point. It’s really getting hard to care. Not saying the story is bad or anything, but the darkness is getting a tad bleak. We need a win and some happytimes soon.
The excessive death toll was communicated from the beginning. The onslaught has been relentless ever since. If it was depressing then, it is depressing now. Yet, readers are still here.
Un-entertaining is when you don’t care what happens to the characters. What I’m really here for is interaction between characters that need to work together. There’s still plenty of that going on, so I’m still entertained. It was a lot harder to care about Contessa and Der Rote Verteidiger, who were very much Einzelgänger and not interested in making a team effort. So their demise is something the survivors should take to heart!
Good point. Those two, being largely unknown and not especially crafty with their tactics, were probably not very interesting (to me) in the first place.
And today I’m at least somewhat curious where Padma is headed, so maybe I was especially gloomy yesterday.
It looks like she went where Contessa and Defender landed.
I think the death toll might feel like a lot as we have to wait for each update (though, as pointed out by others, we were warned by the first pages) but for someone binging through once the chapter is complete it’ll probably be fine.
I’m wondering about the nullifier weapon of the rarg. What is his range. In the initial shot it de powered the entire Magellan island an even hit charisma who was in largo castle. This one looks quite smaller as it didn’t seem to affect anybody except comtessa q and the red idontknowhisname.
About Padma Singh powers. I assume they didn’t port immediately into the ship because of the lack of Intel about what was waiting for them inside. I think she was coming back to the ship before the fall of the red defender and comtessa q. I’m wondering about her next action. Will she port back to evacuate wounded heroes and Hans to safety as erdkoppen defend them or will she use her powers more aggressively by laying a bomb inside the rarg ship before parting back. Assuming the rarg ship isn’ t protecting about human casual weapons as they probably learn about when they attacked the prometheus station
That’s another one for Apocalypse Bingo
I’m guessing she’s going to port back with the literal big guns. Or she kamikazes the jet into a swarm of Rarg.
I never did like the ‘rocks fall and everyone dies’ ending.
20 more pages of this?!?!? That’s two and a half months! Okay seriously, if nobody except our time traveller remembers any of this, this is going to feel nearly pointless seeing all this instead of getting a recap. And I seriously hope nobody stays dead, ’cause by now it seems like 90% of all trained heroes are dying in this thing, and that’s just… I don’t even know…
I’m coming back in two and a half months so I can finally get this part over with and get to the ‘how we fix this’ part already!
Wednesday is March 31st, not April 1st. Is the next page coming on Wednesday or Thursday?
I’d assume 4/1, the Wednesday was just the author’s little April Fools joke on us.
Well, it’s Sunday and we still don’t have Wednesday’s comic, nor today’s. I hope Grace is in good health and just having technical difficulties.
Yeah, hope everyone’s okay. I’m a tad worried at this point.
It has been a week, which is a longer than usual delay. She has been bitten by RL before, so I’m just hoping it’s nothing worse than some technical issues.
She’s survived the austral summer, should be easy sailing from here until next summer.
This will probably draw some fire, but oh well.
With all of the negativity about the death toll and the pace, I wouldn’t be surprised if Grace was in a funk at the moment. This is a labor of love that Grace shares with us on top of whatever happens in her own life. Some appreciate that and are sincerely grateful for it, other seem to act like she is a trained monkey that should dance when they turn the crank.
Dance to your own tune, Grace. Naysayers be damned.
I was actually thinking the same thing as you. I do hope that Grace is ok and that what you said is not the case.
I can only hope that Grace is spending some family time over Easter and will wait patiently for Grace to continue to tell us this story.
As Pascalle Lepas says in the Wilde Life comments, “I do what I want”, you do you Grace and be well.
Yeah, I really hope the comments didn’t get her too down. I hope I didn’t come off as an ass myself. I’ve been loving the comic and I’m still invested in it right now! I hope maybe she’s just bogged down with a bad week at work and decided to give herself some breathing room since she did have another page practically ready to go she put on Patreon.
Fire, absolutely not. Had the same thought myself when I checked in on Sunday, but did at that point not have the time to put words to it.
I have much appreciation and gratefulness towards Grace and her work. I firmly believe that any creative work is very far removed from “trained monkey” and in general has more to lose than gain from pressure. On the other hand, I want to provide honest feedback when feedback is asked for, and Grace brought up the topic of the constant deaths, so I tried to provide my thoughts on the matter. If my opinions about any creative work are ever mistaken as opinions about what the creator should be doing, I deeply apologize, they are not. The creator should of course create what they want to create. This may or may not take into account opinions about their previous or current work, as they see fit, but not too much or the creativity can be at risk. I do not wish that upon any creator.
My thoughts on the current state of this comic could use clarification: I will stick with the comic for 20 (or 30 or however long it takes), despite the deaths, despite being un-entertained at the moment. I really look forward to seeing how this pans out. I expect to re-read it when I can appreciate it better.
Finally: when we as readers feel bad about what’s happening to the characters, it is perfectly reasonable that Grace does too, perhaps even worse despite knowing more about their future – just by being even more connected to them. These are dark days for Magellanverse, any way you cut it. But I do believe we all and if not all at least many of the characters persevere and live to see brighter days in the Magellanverse!
I hope everything is alright.. I’m getting flashbacks to Gene Carlow (RIP)
Catlow*
Do you mean Albert Temple? Well, ffs, I wouldn’t jump staight to that conclusion. It’s a long bloody way from here to there. Like, I know Grace is coming up on 131 but she’s looking bloody good for 130.
Grace, hope you are ok. Anxious to see the story resolved, but more anxious that we haven’t heard from you. Hope your family is well, also. Peace and love.
