PaRARGdox 121
Oh, hey, remember Paradoximan?: So, it seems Paradoximan might… at least in Rochelle’s mind… be able to help Ambrosia to reset the timeline rather than create a new timeline. Guess she has to find him, alive first.
Oh, and yes, Kaycee – who has been elsewhere for events on the island – is about to get some very bad news. But we already know what that is, so for the next update, Go!Anna gets a view of the battlefield, and it ain’t pretty.
Apologies there was only one update this week, I had hoped for the normal Wednesday update – however I’ve been a bit under the gun with my day job this last week. That, combined with the Sydney COVID lockdown, has left me very devoid of creative mojo. Anyway, today starts a new week, fingers crossed for a better creative output.
Patrons: Over on Patreon page 124 is now up – page 125… soonish…
Next update: Maybe Wednesday September 8, 2021: View from the battlefield…
🥺
Admit it Rochelle, you’re just looking for an excuse to kill Paz. 😁
Notice that Rochelle gives Jones compassion and gentle physical contact when breaking the news. Remember how Rochelle did it for Sioni?
Granted, the specifics of their encounter are different, but I’m till shipping these two. Hard.
Rochelle does seem to have more of a soft spot for Kaycee than anyone else, probably since she’s smart, competent, and can keep up with Rochelle’s line of thinking, unlike 90% of her peers. I can totally see this as a ship too.
They are alike in that they lack super powers. I think Rochelle respects Kaycee for being as resourceful as she is despite lacking her genius level intellect.
Rochelle’s hyperintelligence _is_ her super power, though… unless you meant in terms of sheer physical ability?
My apologies, folks:
I went back and reread those pages. Rochelle was actually VERY tender with Sioni about it too, being in shock herself as well. It was his reluctance to accept the reality of the situation while in immediate danger that prompted Kwan to get short with him.
Still . . . with all the other little hints throughout this chapter, I’m still shipping Kaycee/Rochelle.
Rochelle shows that she does care. She just lacks filters.
Could Paradoximan use the code from Wrath of Khan to help out?
Spock: If we go “by the book”. like Lt. Saavik, hours could seem like days.
Paradoximan: If we go by the book, like Rochelle Kwan, minutes would seem like hours. Cadet Paz can go back in time by one minute, which means she really can go back by an hour. (Just before all hell breaks loose)
Or maybe he invokes some version of a divide-by-zero near an infinite red-shift to cancel things out.
He should just use the all-purpose Curry’s Paradox:
“If this sentence is true then .”
* then <whatever you want>
Rochelle is approaching this in the most logical manner she can at the moment. I imagine that in this situation, it helps to ground her so she can cope with the sheer horror of the situation. Under the circumstances, she’s correctly assessing that any and all possibilities must be pursued for the planet to survive, no matter how horrific.
Approaching things in the most logical manner is how she always approaches things, it is the only way she is ever comfortable approaching things. In an entirely safe and comfortable situation she might be persuaded to try another approach, which will be an uncomfortable experiment for her.
I think. Based on my understanding of Rochelle, which is highly guided by personal experience and may be off target. Tends to be more on target than off though.
It grounds her, yes, and in horrific situations that is helpful (but in most situations it can easily be a hindrance).
Logic is all well and good for laying out possible alternatives and probabilities to ascertain a possible path to victory, it is also predictable. Against a telepathic enemy logic is death. If a telepathic enemy gets a whiff of what you are thinking then they can logically fill in the gaps. I think Paz may be a primary target now if Rochelle and/or Kaycee have been or will be read.
Speaking of Rochelle, Force Magellan met the Rarg 6ish years ago at Wolf 359 so there would be a contact report that Rochelle would have read. However the fact that the Rarg were or would be at Jupiter was only known by leadership because it was from “future” intel, not for general dissemination. Yet Rochelle identified the attackers as Rarg (parargdox-46) possibly a wee plot hole. Rochelle would know the Rarg are telepathic, so, is she painting a target on Paz’s back so that she is fatally attacked and jumps back?
Nope, no plot hole. Michael gave an answer on parargdox-47. Rochelle has memorised “Janes Spaceship Recognition Guide”.
I haven’t ever used the phrase “I’m running calculations” like that. I should try, some time, and see if anyone even reacts. It’s very seldom accurate in my case, my thought processes are generally more an exploration of a large graph of quite abstract likelihoods, without any actual numbers but with a whole lot of logic and structure. I guess I’m running simulations.
I assume it’s a placeholder/shorthand for other expressions like… “I’m visiting my mind palace.”
Or ” I went forward in time… to view alternate futures. To see all the possible outcomes of the coming conflict.”
“How many did you see?”
“Fourteen million six hundred and five.”
“How many did we win?”
“…One.”
“Well, at least you know exactly what we nee-HLGHK-”
“What I need to do, yes.”
Anyone have a list of all the cadets in the Meld? for reasons
I’ve got Billy, Rochelle and Charisma,
Pretty much all of the ones that weren’t in the main arena (so, not Rosie, Jemima, Janice, Hamish, Olga, Kaycee…) only a few missed out… “lucky” them!
Brelvis and Fatima are also likely candidates. I’d consider putting Mudge and Nadine on the list as well, although Mudge is less likely to focus on Kaycee specifically, and Nadine is probably too repressed and/or hetero to see Kaycee as anything other than just a friend.
Sioni -maybe- . . . but I doubt it.
Thanks for your comments and conversations, folks. It really is awesome to read – apologies for not joining in, I was unwell with something that laid me low last week.
😭
