There is consensus: The first panel, with the small fonted and blurry text was my attempt to imitate what Olaf’s words would sound like for Olga if her ears were ringing. I thought I’d mention that here, just in case it wasn’t clear!
If you need some reminding about Olaf and their ability to “heal only the dead” then check out The Olaf Mystery. Yasmeen indicated her disquiet with Olaf to Olga, and her desire not to be resurrected by them, as recently as page 7.13. Oops, too late now.
Also, how great is the word “revivified”?
Patreon: By the way, should it be a thing that interests you, my Magellan patrons over at Patreon have been getting full previews three updates ahead of schedule. And you can too for as little as $1 a month… 😎
Families/Cемьи: Page 16 is now online. Page 17 will go up um, soon. Stay tuned! By voting you not only get a new page of this story but you help raise Magellan’s profile and help potential new readers find us.
Next update: Sunday 9 August: Why does the big headed floaty kid still have their powers?
Well, that’s not disturbing at all…
🤏 Little bit, yeh 🙄 Imagining the feeling of Olaf looming over you being the first thing you see when you recover your senses 😬
Revivified IS a cool word, but honestly, the first word that came to mind when I saw Sun in the last panel was *zombified*🧟♀️🙃
We all float down here……
Worst part is *SPOILER WARNING FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT READ THE OLAF MYSTERY* Olaf KNOWS Yasmeen doesn’t want them to resurrect her, and is doing it anyway. Maybe they have their reasons, but it’s still transgressive.
Olaf knows Yasmeen doesn’t like them and that she fears being resurrected. That’s not quite the same thing as preferring to stay dead–she only said that to Olga, not to Olaf. Perhaps they hope that helping her will encourage her to give them another chance.
Or maybe they don’t care what she thinks of them and still want to help her because they’re the heroic sort like they’re supposed to be.
Olga probably should have been quicker to object since she does know that Yasmeen explicitly said that, but I think she can be forgiven for taking a moment to process and it’s probably not a good idea to interrupt the revivification once it’s started.
Ooorrrrr . . . Olaf is “beyond” human understanding, and much like posing the question regarding Olga and Matt’s hypothetical babies’ mortality, Olaf is doing this for motives which are not yet apparent to the audience.
Like . . . maybe there’s something in it for Olaf to “revive” metapowered individuals who are recently deceased.
Doesn’t that incident demonstrate that, while Olaf is bad at people, they also want to understand? And they honor boundaries–poorly, by compiling a list of specific questions not to ask instead of working on the why, but they do.
Sun Moon is now a..zombie!?
Unclear exactly what Olaf’s ‘revivification’ does. So far, his subjects seem alive and healthy, and able to think, but they do seem eerily devoted to Olaf afterwards. Have their minds been tampered with? Or are they just grateful?
A guess: since they have died, perhaps they no longer have souls. When Olaf ‘revivifies’ them, he must therefore give them a soul – and he has a multitude of them trapped inside his head…
The soul is the part that’s you. That’s what it means.
Unless one of Olaf’s fragments is impersonating Svetty and Sun, which Olaf doesn’t seem particularly capable of and would be outright lying, that seems unlikely.
Sun is speaking in short sentences, which sounds choppy, but there’s nothing particularly off about what she’s actually saying. Praising Olaf after they just saved her life isn’t so strange. She doesn’t look so good, but she did just die–and I think that’s mostly smudged makeup.
Maybe I’m wrong, but Lord Psiot trusts Olaf and the teachers haven’t been warned about their power–unlike some others.
Kaycee looked rougher after she was killed and revivified, I think. And she also bonded with Vostok after he did it.
You’re probably right. I’m sure everything will turn out just fine 😐
See? There’s nothing ominous at all! Olaf is great.
True, but the soul is distinct from the mind, in most cosmologies. If you had a different soul, but the same mind, with all the same memories, would you even know you were any different? You would simply feel a bond with Olaf that wasn’t there before – because your new soul was part of Olaf’s consensus before.
Give? Or -take- . . . hmmMMMmm?
*hums to Itself*
. . .
I mean, I could say “I know something you don’t know,” but in earnest, Grace could have very easily changed what she and I discussed about Olaf those few years ago. I’m honestly in the dark (almost) as much as any of the rest of you fellow readers.
Still . . . if the plans are moving along the course I set up with Grace, then Olaf’s going to be having a field day out there!
So . . .
Many . . .
Bodies!
So.
Many.
Fresh.
Souls . . .
Blood and souls for my lord Arioch!
🙃
She definitely LOOKS disturbingly …
Olaf’s powers probably rebuilds someone’s life force instead of just bringing it back. It may have some implications if he has to use it multiple times like he’s about to do with pretty much everyone who got killed.
Maybe we see each person that comes back will slowly end up more “off” with each revive, Or they could be just going through the experience of coming back to life from death which could pretty much shake up someone’s psyche I bet.
My take on it is that since Olaf not only ‘revivifies’ but heals the death dealing injury in the process, it’s likely other ailments get corrected in the process. This might offer an insight to how the Rarg depowering pulse worked on (most) people’s bodies and that it is either not permanent or at least reversible somehow. 🙂
But I do think you’re close with the ‘rebuild’ concept albeit with some caveats that I won’t go into because, hey, that could be grist for a future story!!
Guess that’s the one way to know if being brought back by Olaf changes your personality. Yasmeen doesn’t seem like the type whose opinion would change fast, so if she’s brought back and she’s pissed about it or even simply still distrustful of the whole process it probably means the process is kosher.
If Yasmeen is brought back and she’s immediately like “this is fine, I was wrong about Olaf, there’s no problem here…” Then we may have an Olaf problem in the long term. Short term the whole alien invasion thing is kiiiiiiinda more important right now.
I’m going to guess that Olaf still has his powers because his access to his power source wasn’t cut off… Because instead of having a connection to another plane or an energy field Olaf’s power source is internal.
The power source that was disrupted was based on the planet Earth’s aethersphere. Any being who gets their power from that, lost them. Basically all the aliens and any intellect based supers are fine. So while dying would break the connection completely, restoring the life seems to restore the connection. So that would seem that only the link between the people and the Aethersphere was attacked. Sounds a lot like their connection to the Aethersphere is being Rebooted. I wonder if Vlad or Charisma would be willing to be rebooted too.
More interestingly, Olaf’s power is undisturbed.
You are correct, thanks for the clarification (literally). The text was not clear, my eyes were ringing. 🙂
PS: The effect came across correctly, I’m just being a Goofball.
I wonder if someone’s going to bring up rebirth by Olaf as a means of bypassing the power suppressor. I wonder if anyone would volunteer for it?
Kaycee did. It wouldn’t be much use to her this time, though.
If Olaf’s,ahem, grateful patients start suggesting killing some more cadets to get more powers online, we’ll have another problem.
I just have to say one things about this page:
YES!
YES!!!
YESSS!!!
*counts* 🤔… heh
Pride in ownership😊
Grace is the one who owns the intellectual property of the character Olaf.
I just appreciate her general adherence to the proposed content related to Olaf which I had a hand in establishing.
Hello Pet Semitary
How much can Olaf do at once? I’m just thinking–if Olaf somehow survives the black holeification of the Earth, can the entire planet be brought back (considering the Earth can be classified as a living being)? And if so, there’s also the possible result of everyone and everything who has died coming back to life (if Olaf were to resurrect not just the planet but also the beings on it).
Still, the solution to this issue seems like it’s actually going to come from Ambrosia, and I think as well that Charisma will face a trolley problem in order for the world to be saved. Granted, how those two come into play is not easy to pin down, but they were already set up.
Ohhhh… That smile isn’t natural.
