Row, row, row your boat…: Trust Charisma to not focus on the more important issues at hand… maybe Kaycee should have placed her face down in the boat. We’re catching up on them from pages 7.53-54. Keep in mind, only a few minutes have passed for our two intrepid cadets.
Also, yes, I’ve never rowed a boat before so I watched a rowing video on YouTube to make this reasonably accurate (and still got it wrong… I made an adjustment following Patreon feedback and hope it is just a little more accurate now ๐).
Patreon: By the way, should it be a thing that interests you, my Magellan patrons over at Patreon have been getting full previews three updates ahead of schedule. And you can too for as little as $1 a month… ๐
Families/Cะตะผัะธ: Page 16 is now online. Sorry for the delay to this… hoping to restart from September, it’s been a crazy couple of months and it’s dented my productivity. Stay tuned! By voting you not only get a new page of this story but you help raise Magellan’s profile and help potential new readers find us.
Next update: Sunday 2 September: Who ๐ Kaycee???
What? I showered this morning.
Ha! Kaycee looks like she’s giving a little glare in the last panel ๐๐
Alright. Place bets as to who has the crushes on Kaycee! Billy is the obvious one, but who are the other two? Fatima, Nadine, Jenna, Mudge, and Brelvis are all good candidates, though I’m of the mind part of Charisma’s hostility is a nascent crush she just doesn’t want to admit. I mean, what’s the first basic rule of a schoolyard crush? Pigtail pulling, and boy, she LOVES doing that to Kaycee.
Brelvis is known to have a crush on Kaycee, or maybe have had? It is certain at least when she first moves to Magellan island, still quite clear at the end of her first year, in Worst Fieldtrip Ever: http://magellanverse.com/comic/frunky/ But I don’t know of any evidence that’s more recent than that, so it may well have simmered down from crush back to love as a friend.
Whether or not Charisma has a crush on Kaycee, Kaycee is saving her life here, which does create a rather deep connection. I think we’re witnessing the start of at least a friendlier attitude between them, probably more. Professional partnership, eventually. Unprofessional partnership? I don’t know. Maybe Freya does, to some degree: http://magellanverse.com/comic/candid/
“Kaycee is saving her life here, which does create a rather deep connection”
*cough*JamesPotter*cough*SeverusSnape*cough*
I don’t remember those books very clearly at this point, but Severus Snape is quite possibly a psychopath, which by definition doesn’t count when discussing emotional attachments.
The window into the HP world was Harry Potter almost everything we know from the main books is through his eyes or directly tied into his story; and Harry’s stroy doesn’t really begin until after the point where Snape considers himself to already be dead.
Snape was in love with Lilly, he wasn’t a pyschpath or a sociopath,
No, he was willingly playing the evil teacher & a total asshat to kids for no reason other then his virgin rage at Lily not picking him over James.
Even if true (not really), that doesn’t change all the other, uh, crime.
Being an ally to the good guys against a worse guy doesn’t make him a good guy.
Absolutely none of his abusive behavior was in any way related to the later reveals. He still did it all. Harry learning his backstory doesn’t erase everything he did in between then and the backstory.
As I alluded to, I did not remember clearly enough. Anyways: jealousy can be a very strong thing, sometimes as strong as the love, thus dwarfing other emotions. Which makes this a bad example anyway, but also makes Snape not a psychopath. I maintain that he is two or more standard deviations from the mean in some sort of way though, but I admit to having no idea exactly how. It’s not exactly my area of expertise :p
It’s probably hard to be in Slytherin and not be at least 50% psychopath…!!
Yup, we all know that’s not a boat: it’s a ship!
I’m always on the “Charisma’s got a deep seeded crush on Kaycee” ship. Putting most of my money on that plan.
Problem is, Charisma has absolutely no experience expressing positive feelings. She was created by her mother as a tool to manipulate her father – I suspect she never received love or affection from her mother. In a way, the abuse and hostility she heaps on Kaycee IS her idea of a positive relationship with her – she’s learning that she doesn’t have to coddle Kaycee, that she can take what Charisma dishes out.
On the rowing, in the last panel, the way Kaycee is digging deep, is not really good for control and requires a lot more effort. Ideally, you want the oars away from the boat, the stroke starts abeam the rower or just in front, and ends about 50ยฐ after the start. The handles want to make a flat oval pattern, the flatter the better. For efficient rowing you want to make sure that you lift the paddles out while you’re still doing the tail end of the stroke so that there is no drag generated from that stage. People that do race rowing then roll the oar so the blade is parallel with water for the backstroke (reducing wind resitance and to prvent skipping on the surface(more drag)) and then roll it again so that they can put it in the water for the next stroke. Going straight is pulling with equal tension on both oars at once and picking an object off the middle of the stern so you can see how much you are yawing.
Believe me, the last panel is now much better than it was!! ๐
My take on the last panel is Kaycee is trying to resist the urge to whack Charisma on the head with them.
Panels 1 and 2 look very much like someone who is new to it, and does not have an experienced teacher on hand, sometimes (maybe even often) end up doing it in reality. The last panel still looks a bit weird even for someone with no idea what they’re doing though. Maybe mostly because of those speed lines that, for Kaycee’s right hand oar, shouldn’t have been in the frame at all with that framing. But it is rather hypocritical of me to criticize such things. I wouldn’t even attempt a sketch with any perspective, I only sketch three straight-on views from rather predictable orthogonal axes. Yes, I’m an engineer. The only thing I ever sketch with perspective is a cube with a few dots representing atoms in it, and I’m not any good at even that ๐ ๐
How did you go with Descriptive Geometry in Uni? Sounds like you may not have liked it too much.
Descriptive Geometry is an apt description, if not for the rather big possibility of there being a field in mathematics called exactly that! ๐ I do enjoy blueprints and mechanics, my brain is pretty good at it – but my hands seem not to do what my brain tells them to do. I can handle a keyboard decently, fine mechanics just fine, but with pencil and paper I’m just rubbish. It does not make a lot of sense to me, but humans and biology rarely does. Computers and physics are what makes sense to me.
(On the other hand, my degree was focussed on materials science, so I did not do much mechanical engineering in it. And it is mostly CAD nowadays anyways which I am not bad at.)
For all we know, Kaycee rowed a boat once at a school camp five years ago, and has forgotten half of what she learned. She isn’t Batman yet…
Her negligence will cost the Earth dearly today.
I think it looks a lot like a newbie rower, in an unfamiliar boat (who won’t be making good time with the rowing, but that’s what you get). I learned in a lightweight shell, with lightweight oars and good rowlocks, and thought I was decent – but then I got into a skiff with much heavier wooden oars and rowlocks that don’t give feedback when the oar’s in the right position, and it took me a considerable time to adjust.
I’ll go with this explanation… ๐
Kaycee will resist the urge to dump Charisma overboard.
Only because of the internal bleeding. If Charisma were de-powered and healthy, but talking that kind of sass . . .
Well Charisma, how do you think Kaycee feels with you staring at her crotch?
MIGHT be right? There is other reason for coughing blood than internal injury?
Drank too much blood and choked.
I didn’t tried it with blood, but based on my experience with water or tea, quantity is irrelevant to chance of choking.
An unusual demonstration of irony on Charisma’s part, probably due to an onset of delirium… pretty sure she’s gonna end up needing Olaf’s attention.
She will NEVER admit Kaycee is right. About anything.
…not yet.
This is why you put passengers in the prow of the boat, Kaycee.
Of course, then you couldn’t keep an eye on her. And then, she’d probably just whine about having to stare at your butt.
Charisma should be in the bow facing forward, so as to look out for anything coming from the island. Granted, that’s probably what she’s actually doing while sitting in the stern.
