Go!Anna, calling Magellan USA…?: Back to Go!Anna with only a few minutes passed since we saw her last on page 7.72. Oh, and yes, she does step out of the faraday cage before trying to use her comms… 😉
Oh, and then, over to Prometheus Corp HQ in Southern California where we saw Magellan USA get into a fair bit of trouble – starting from page 7.73.
Turns out though, that wasn’t all of Magellan USA…! Who are these two stay-behinds? Well, nothing yet on the blonde… but you might remember the man frog dude as an unnamed cameo first seen in Bad Karma as a Year 4 cadet on page 4.149. Year 4 back then… so Year 6 now. I later went on to name him on the Cast page as Porgus Vat, an anthro-frog whose condition was due to a curse. What does this have to do with anything? Stand by!!
Patrons: Over on Patreon page 87 is now up! 😎
Next update: Wednesday December 9: Beta Team Go!!?
I think I know what Porgus’s response to the situation will be: “Ribbit.” The guy always knows how to speak to the truth of the situation.
Now I want him and Groot to have a conversation. It would drive everybody around them nuts! 🙂
If the Rrarg used their power nullifier on Porgus Vat would that break his curse?
Now that’s an interesting theory. Given they could affect magic as well as tech and DNA+ individuals, one has to wonder if that would do the trick, especially since most curses are designed to have an out, even if it’s not necessarily thought of right away.
Probably depends on if there’s “active” magic keeping him a frog, or if the magic was just used to change him and then went away.
I always found Porgus to be an intriguing individual even from his short cameos. Actually, he might be my favorite cameo character just based off all the questions that roll through my mind every time he crops up.
How did he get cursed? What made him decide to become a Magellan candidate? Why hasn’t he been able to break it despite the wide range of magical users we’ve seen in the comic? Does he truly want the curse to be broken so he can live a normal life or does he prefer his cursed state since it means he can do a lot more good in the world? Does the man-frog curse give him the proportional strength, hopping power, and tongue range of a frog a la what the spider’s bite did to Peter Parker? So many questions!
Bigger question: how can Blondie understand him? Is this just the standard Star Wars trope where one person ‘just understands’ the incomprehensible android or alien speech, and replies in English, which is just as hand-wavingly understood by the other? Or is this part of her powers?
In this case AND in case of Star Wars robots, it’s obvious why they understand English. Actually, understanding the beeping may not be that hard, while this case of “Blondie can understand him” may actually be just her pretending to understand better than it seems and reacting just on the tone.
I have another question: Is she volunteering? Or in other words, flirting with him?
I have a very awesome answer for that, but one which won’t get covered at this point.
Blondie clearly wants that man-frog D.
Don’t you? He has such a way with words!
. . . and then there’s that tongue.
RIBBIT!!!
At first, I thought Go’Anna is still in the Faraday cage, which would have prevented the radio from working. I guess Annie knows enough to get out of the cage before trying that, as the cage is not seen in the background in that panel. Well, that and the fact that the two left on the plane could hear her.
Oh, never mind. I just read the author’s commentary where that gets mentioned.
I can totally see her trying in the cage and then like “oh, of course, the cage”. Can happen to everyone.
Indeed. In the original artwork the background colour of the third panel was similar to that of the second. But I swapped that out once I realised that could be construed as her using the communicator inside the cage.
I’m not sure what they are playing but I don’t think blondie’s cards are good.
She’s probably thankful for the interruption…
For someone who’s cursed he apparently doesn’t want to get un-cursed much… Is it going to turn out that actually before the curse turned him into a man-frog he was… just a frog?
That’s a hilarious idea! 😂
My thoughts too – and now he’s probably out lived a frog’s lifespan.
For the future… have a stock of comms stored in faraday cages just in case shit like this happens again…
Speaking of page 4.149, I think Blondie may be on that page, too! (Check Panel 4, upper-right hand corner.) It makes sense that they’d be classmates, as they seem comfortable with each other, and Blondie’s not afraid to comment on Porgus’ “sensitive issues”. It might also explain why they were left behind on the jet – they’re both junior members, who often get relegated to menial tasks.
That does look like her, but it seems unlikely to be her, as Grace would probably have mentioned them both being on that page, plus… reasons.
Similarities aside, that couldn’t be her as (spoiler) she is a year ahead of Porgus… as we’ll hear in the next update. But yeah, they may be close in the way that Montana Rose and Jemima are with Hamish and Janice.
While putting the “whole damn island” in a Faraday cage might solve this problem, it would also prevent communications to the outside. I can see limiting it to the buildings as wireless communications WITHIN the building would still work, just not outside/inside communications. That would require an antenna to the outside…which is a single point of failure (backup wires?). Of course, this wouldn’t protect anybody who was outside at the time.
