Magellan
Olga & Brelvis

One Upmanship
So one of the ways to establish yourself in the group pecking order is to drop names. After all it's not what you know but who you know in many social circumstances! It also gives us a chance to meet the cadets and learn some more bout them.

Olga & Brelvis

Part of the fun of this was that it delves into some of the main comic continuity... mentions of Mudge, Kaycee, Charisma and Epoch, alongwith discussions of Brelvis' visist to Oz Magellan plus Magellan USA fighting the Anti-President. it even helps to invent some continuity - Mehfizto's attack on the International Justice Force (I.J.F.) in California is mentioned in the main comic on page 6.37! Drawing Epoch and the I.J.F. in this art-style was also fun. Trying to explain Olga's origin here was an interesting challenge, it is quite complex, but hopefully it should make sense to most.

Four new cadets are introduced:

  • Matt Bloom: dna+; sub-zero temperature control; USA
  • Kyunda Mbutu: dna+; ability to split into multiples; Kenya
  • Maria Ponti: DNA mutate; luminance/light force control; Italy
  • Yasmeen Jafari: witch; Iran

Yasmeen is muslim, I went with a looser headscarf as is seen in some parts of Iran rather than the full hijab. Religion doesn't play much of a role in Magellan, although obviously all the characters have varying degrees of spiritual belief (or not) and for some that is the more traditional variety - but the expression of it for many it isn't very visible, the exception being forms where clothing, headwear, facial hair, etc play a role (for example, Jenna Zots, a Forn demon and cadet in the next year up, demonstrates her faith and religion through a style of head shaving). As for how Yasmeen's witchery might clash with her beliefs, that is a story for some other time perhaps!
